It is a commonly stated belief that Saban saved the LSU football program. That he pulled the program out of the ashes. That his saving grace is singular and nearly impossible for any mortal man. That Miles is not as good a coach as Saban because Miles would have been unequal to the task.

Saban took a team that had two losing seasons in a row and turned them around.

Season 1: 8-4 (5-3 in SEC)
Season 2: 10-3 (6-3 in SEC)

Surely, no other coach could have performed such a Herculean task at LSU. Thus, Saban is better than Miles because Miles could have never done it. No coach could have done it at LSU.

These are obviously false numbers. It is a well known fact that LSU never lost a game while Saban was at the helm.

Dinardo probably had a more significant win than Saban did early in his career - knocking off #1 Florida when they had no business being on the field with them talent wise!

Saban didn't come close to touching Florida until Spurrier left! He did have success against arguably more talented Tennessee teams though.

Exactly, my friend. If Dinardo can get one more point in the SC game (a win instead of a tie), he has a BETTER record than Saban after SIX years of crappy football. (You should have added the last two years of Mike Archer.)

Does anyone think that Miles could not have done what DiNardo did?

Saban is the bestest coach in the history of the world ever.

Interesting question.

DiNardo was good for shaking things up and pushing us in the right direction (Bring Back the Magic), but not at sustaining a "program."

So far, it seems, Les has done an admirable job of sustaining a program, but I guess it remains to be seen if he has what it takes to shake things up, and retool, if and when that is necessary. (Is it now? I don't know.)

At the very least, he is not afraid to retool at the coordinator level.

DiNardo: He had a problem at DC; he was unwilling to fix it.

Miles: He had a problem at DC; he fixed it.

No, Coach Saban is a MAJOR program rebuilder. The biggest difference I have seen between the two in rebuilding a program is that Coach Saban is willing to sacrifice his family to rebuild a football program while Coach Miles will not go that far.

I'm not a huge Miles guy but you have no idea what his schedule is, nor how much his family is abandoned throughout the year.

I didn't even see that as, necessarily, a shot at Miles.

I don't think Les is writing off his kids.

Miles hasn't had to rebuild a program, so how can you make that assessment.

No, was not meant as a shot at Coach Miles. It is just infomation I was told from someone within the football offices.

But we know what his pay check is. I have never like Miles. He is not a bad coach, but we can do better.

Better than a 10+ wins/season? Be careful what you wish for. Curly Hallman was considered a great coach at Southern Miss.

Before this thread gets completely derailed by comments about who is a better coach by how much they are willing to sacrifice (really?), people falsely assume that anyone can recruit at the level that Miles has been recruiting.

LSU has seen plenty of coaches who couldn't recruit like Miles. Moreover, the NCAA is strewn with the ended careers of coaches who couldn't recruit like Miles.

+1. No one every scored 10 or more on LSU,either. We also never were penalized and were up for every team and dominated every opponent.

Saban was fortunate to come at the time when La had one of the best HS senior crop in the nation and many of that crop were coming to LSU because they grew up fans of LSU. Now fast foward Saban to Alabama and plug in what was wriiten about La HS talent that year and apply that to Alabama and you get identical situations. LSU and Alabama made/is making Saban, not the other way around. Now to answer your question. Most likely. Miles has already proven he could win with LSU players. Dinardo/Watts/Reese also proved to be a winning combination. Dinardo's bad OC/DC replacements and stubborness and Tepper's bad schemes set LSU back, but the sleeping giant with the talent already on board and the talent prepared to come was already set in motion.

1. Invented the game of Football
2. Created the Internets
3. Eats 37 boxes of Little Debbie Cakes a day
4. Hasn't actually slept of 12 years because of his football genius
5. Wins every game he coaches. When a team he is associated with loses, it's because of crappy players.
6. won with Gerry Dinardo's and Mike Shula's players.....Oh wait....check that one
