USC Coach Pete Carroll has not led his team to a national championship since 2004 and a NC game since 2005. Since that time, Texas, UF and LSU have won titles and USC has lost at least 1 game per year to an unranked conference team.

This year, breaking in a new QB and a young defense, with new coordinators on both sides of the ball, USC is clearly rebuilding, running to a 7-3 record and allowing 102 pts in their last two losses. The record could run to 8-4 with a game against Arizona on the horizon, and who knows, a young USC team might fold in a crappy bowl game, or they could use that as a springboard for the next season. Either way, Pete Carroll's USC Trojans are most certainly not going to win the Pac-10 this year, they are not going to play in a BCS bowl, and they are not competing for anything other than pride at the end of a bad season.

Why do I bring this up? Because through the 2007 season, LSU had won 4 division titles, 3 conference titles and 2 national championships. At this point, the defensive coordinator left, a senior starting QB left and LSU had to start over at QB because our starter-in-waiting was dismissed for being a dumbass. We also had to replace a solid defensive coordinator who took a high-profile job at Nebraska. So, clearly there would be growing pains on both sides of the ball. LSU struggled mightily, going 8-5 (3-5). This season, LSU still struggles offensively, because we are yet again breaking in a new QB. This season, though, the defense is solid and LSU is 8-2.

For some reason, though, despite the obvious overall improvement, the "Fire Les Miles" crew is on a rampage, despite the only losses being to the #1 and #2 teams in the country, one of those on the road. People point to 2008 results as if they have some relevance to the 2009 season and as if they have been repeated to some degree in 2009. LSU will have a better conference record in 2009, that's guaranteed. LSU will likely have a better overall record in 2009, with just one more victory in 3 remaining games.

So, the question here is, based on how LSU fans react to a subpar season, are USC fans done with Pete Carroll after one subpar season?

Great post/question but you know what the main answer is going to be....thats USC and its their business how they deal with their coach.

Great question, and here's the answer in respect to our fans. We all believe (and truly know) that the SEC has the most talent overall in the league from top to bottom, along with more great coaches from top to bottom than any other conference. USC plays in a sub-par conference, meaning that for the past few years they were the onyl really good team in their league, making them very susceptible for a let-down game. They are not challenged on a regular basis like all SEC teams are. Our fans are quick to point this out when the media starts talking about how good USC is because they dominate their conference, but seem to forget this fact when we have one down year which was in a sense a rebuilding year. I can only hope that the "Fire Les Miles" crew never manage any place that I work. Someone would be fired every day.

Some are yes, just as some of our fanbase wants Les to go.

Your point?

Let it go...some LSU fans are completely kneejerk senstive about 2003 that even adjacent years are too close for comfort.

For you people that think other schools fans arent like LSU fans, you need to get your head checked.

Every school has that fringe element.

The booers, the unruly students, the people who leave early, the people who are not satisfied no matter what.

This is EVERYWHERE, not just LSU.

The Pac 10 is not a subpar conference. Our OOC record is great, although spotty. No USC fans are not calling for pete's removal. Florida two years ago lost four games, and last year LSU had 100 points scored on them in two games. This sort of thing happens. Its a bad year for USC, but it is bound to happen. Four pac 10 teams in the top 25.

DrEdgeLSU,
I could not have said that better myself. One thing I will add. The two losses for LSU this year was also aided by the SEC referees (if anyone disagrees with that then you are a racist ).

Nice try, but the PAC 10 is loaded with teams with the calibre of MISSISSIPPI STATE. USC is clearly the best team in that conference on a consistant basis. However, when a superior team has to play MISSISSIPPI STATE week in and week out it is just hard to be up each week. I admit that OREGON and STANFORD are good teams this year, but will they be consistant winners down the road. I doubt it.

Buz (my apologies to MISSISSIPPI STATE for the use as an example)

Let him lose to Cal and UCLA two years in a row and come back and ask that question.

I'm not calling for Miles' head, but in defense of the nega-tigers:

- Pete Carroll built the USC powerhouse, Les Miles inherited a loaded program
- Pete Carroll has won 1.5 National Titles and went from Sept. 2003 - January 2006 without losing a game. He has played in 2.5 National Title games. Les Miles had 2 losses in his only National Title year.
- Pete Carroll has won his conference 7 straight years. Les Miles has won 1 conference title.
- Pete Carroll is in his first sub-par season (for that program). Les Miles needs to finish strong to avoid his 2nd straight sub-par year (yes 8-4 would be sub-par).

The season isn't over.

If we lose to Ole Miss and Arky...which is a legitimate possibility, then the only difference between this year and last year is that we beat a down UGA (after losing Stafford and Moreno) AND we didn't get blown out by UF. Losing a close one to Bama...having to come from behind to beat an inferior team in Tiger Stadium after Bama...then having the wheels fall off...sounds vaguely familiar to last year.

So, the defense was much, much better...but the offense was much worse. Yea!

Now, if Les can keep the wheels from falling off for these last two games...then I think that you can make the claim that we've shown "obvious" improvement over last year.

Some USC fans are calling for Carrolls job
Some UGA fans are calling for Richts job.

After this season, you can bet some OU fans will be calling for Stoops job.
