John Connor and the Holy Grail
UPDATE: Writer emails going out over the next two days. All votes tallied and checked. So all we have to do is get the writers on it (a week or so) and the list will be released early next week, or post christmas?
UPDATE: A change has been issued to give us some more movies, and therefore extend the voting period as well. You will now extend your Top 10 list into a Top 20. This gives you a chance to put in those movies that were missed and gives us a better chance at a Top 50 with all movies receiving at least 2 or 3 votes.
Top 50 Science Fiction and Top 50 Comedy Movies
OMG "It's Here!!! I didn't think Freaux's Lazy arse would ever do it. You are joking. And he came up with a lame-o title to boot!"
Well, my answer to that last question is, I asked for other suggestions so in order to not wait any longer, a lame title it is.
Contrary to popular belief, the whole reason I didn't do it was because I never had more than 4 days between trips for the past 3 months. Not enough to spend time checking, tallying, checking, double checking, etc.
But if you notice I have been posting more recently, and I just returned from a 6 city tour, and now that I am sitting down grading what seems to be an endless amount of college sophomore composition papers, I figure it's time to do it as I should catch up with work right around time to tally up scores in 6 days.
So, yes, it is happening. For real. Honest. No this isn't a mirage. Plus I am super excited for the next two lists: Top Directors (Spring) and Fall of 2010 will be the big Top 100 of the Decade, which will be a blast (should I start pressing for The Prestige now?).
So here are the rules, a little different from last time:
Two sets of top 50 films, Science Fiction and Comedy, the "fun genres."
So rank your Top 20 of each 1-20. Number 1 being your highest ranked, and 20 being your lowest. Please be clear about your lists.
Although we will not put limits on what is or isn't a genre fulfilling film--the debate over Star Wars as sci-fi--give it some thought at least. Comedies are easy, science fiction is a tough genre though.
So,get to watching, remembering, voting, reliving those wonderful moments of joy or wonderment.
And.....
"Listen, Strange women, lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government."
Have fun.
Sorry for the wait folks. I really do enjoy the board, and I hope people enjoy the voting/ranking/listing process. I know I do, it's just been busy for me.
P.S. I am taking requests for writers of small reviews/analysis of the top films. Top 5 of each group if I have enough.

I'll do a blurb.
I'll post a list here soon too.
It will absolutely include:
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
This is Spinal Tap!
Dumb and Dumber
Airplane
From there I have work to do

3 of these 4 will make my 10 most likely. Maybe even all 4.

Freaux -- where do I send my lists? And, of course, I volunteer to write for any of the ones I vote for (and even the ones I don't if you're in a pinch). I need to think on my lists though, and don't want to send them yet.
It's harder than you think.

I'll do a blurb.
Just out of curiosity, are romantic comedies a part of Comedies or a completely separate genre? If so what would be the line?

Should I post my first list in this thread? I did a sci fi one because I knew it would be harder. Had to leave a lot of great movies out.
1. Metropolis - Pretty much set the stage for every other science fiction film that followed it. Too bad we will never see it in its entirety
2. Back to the Future - my favorite movie of all time
3. Brazil
4. Alien
5. The Terminator
6. A Clockwork Orange
7. Aliens
8. Time Bandits
9. Videodrome
10. Repo Man
Soylent Green and The Day the Earth Stood Still were my last two out. I decided to go with movies that I personally love over movies that were artistically amazing. It was also hard not to include the original War of the Worlds. Anyway, I could keep going, but this is my fanboy list.

Top 10 Comedies of All Time will be very difficult. I will need to really think long and hard before rendering my decision.

Needed for points man. It's tough, because I love the sci fi genre and will be leaving off many great movies.

Freaux -- where do I send my lists?
Post in thread, same process as last time.
quote:
Just out of curiosity, are romantic comedies a part of Comedies or a completely separate genre? If so what would be the line?
Yes. The movie's intent determines it's genre. If it's meant to make you laugh, it's a comedy. Now there are a few movies, Dr. Strangelove, that could be considered both in this case, and those are totally viable in either. This isn't an either or.
quote:
Should I post my first list in this thread?
Yup.
quote:

Go for it anyway. It's not like we have a bunch of snobs around here. And it would be good to have an equal vote count for each.
quote:
Again I alphabetized it instead of listing them in order, it really was hard enough just to narrow it to ten.
I use a version of the IMDB formula to rank them, so I really do need a ranked list. This does a few things:
1) Keeps it from having too many ties.
2) Weights how good you actually think it is compared to the stuff you have seen. A movie with fewer votes than another but an average higher ranking has a chance of beating it out.
