Some LSU profs don't support athletics

so in the course of my work, I meet and entertain faculty at LSU as well as other SEC schools.
Yesterday, I was at lunch with a prof and he said the "the football team is one of the more insidious aspects of the university". He said, people should spend their time worrying about and trying to fix bigger problems.
That struck me as to wonder how much of a disconnect professors who teach at LSU have with the students they serve and the community as a whole.

You entertain profs. Do you work for the communist party?
He should teach at MIT, CalTech or U of Chicago if he wants to be in a purely academic environment.

I bet he's a cross-dresser.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

He is correct. In the grand scheme of things if the money, talent and energy spent on LSU football and its surrounding events were spent on social ills, I dramatic positive impact would be felt.
However, I would rather tailgate than work than build a house for Habitat. Much along the lines of also liking cheeseburgers versus soy patties, I know one is the wiser healthier choice, but I do the other. Cause I like it.

you should have responded with "the university degree system is one of the most insidous aspects of modern education." How many poli sci, english lit or sociology majors can a school churn out?? wtf is a "general studies" major?

He says this knowing that the athletic department is a souce of funds for academics as well as athletics.

What he fails to realize is that the LSU football team brings in more money than probably anything else. Without the football program, everything else would falter.
Just like James Caan's character said in the movie "The Program", "Yeah, but when was the last time 80,000 people showed up to watch a kid do a damn chemistry experiment? Why don't you stick the bow-tie up your arse?"

Well for most universities in the country I think athletics probably barely break even or lose money... if he came from a school like this before LSU then he was probably right in saying that... LSU however is one of the few that probably does rake in a lot more (mostly from football) than they spend

This is the basic personality flaw that causes liberalism (that, and lots of drug use). They are basically unhappy losers that want to inflict their misery on the rest of us.

Football is a whole lot more important and will bring the university a lot more money than whatever meaningless research the prof is doing.

Excellent point. At least football pays for itself - more than you can say for these liberal leach profs that live off the taxpayers.

some profs are frustrated that while the football team has all the resources it needs to compete on a top level nationally, the college itself does not. many more people would rather donate $ to the athletic dept. than the college. they probably sometimes think that LSU is a football team situated on a college campus rather than a college that has a football team. from what i understand, this is a common feeling among profs, esp at southern colleges. i think they have a point, whatever their political leanings. however, it is what it is and LSU has certainly raised its academic standards and i pray they continue. i also hope that our athletic success continues. i am a greedy sob.

Spoken like a true bleeding heart liberal!

I think it was Bear Bryant who once said in response to some thing similar to this subject....."I hadn't seen a math department yet that could bring the kind of money to the university that football does"
I'm quoting but really shouldn't cause that might not be the exact line but was the jist if it

Hell that sounds like the entire faculty and administration at Tulane. They will tell you the only true mission of any university should be to educate people, athletics is a waste of money. Of course most could not walk and chew gum.

as much as I love LSU football...the man has a point. with a collegiate quality ranking of #128 nationaly (LSU, the university, should be no lower than #50)...global warming...the loss of Louisiana's wetlands and the erosion of it's coasts...the diversification of industry and job creation...the pathetic levels of healthcare...the rebuilding of lost and protective infrastructure for New Orleans and the coast parishes...the statewide deterioation of social and racial climates...etc, etc, etc.
He was probably alluding to the abnormal amount of focus on an entity that could be easily described as seasonal entertainment.
