BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference has suspended officials from last weekend's Arkansas-Florida game after the crew was involved in its second controversial call of the year.

Referee Marc Curles' crew called a personal foul on Arkansas defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory. The league said there was no video evidence to support the call.

The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the league said shouldn't have been called.

"A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday. "I believe our officiating program is the best in the country. However, there are times when these actions must be taken."

Glad to see that they aren't just leaving it alone.

If he believed this that crew wouldn't have been on the Florida - Arkansas game to begin with.

Good to see them do this, I hope it makes refs in all the conferences take notice. The SEC is setting a great example by doing this IMO

The refs from the Oregon/Oklahoma game a few years back were suspended and the Pac-10 officiating has only gotten worse

This has happened in other conferences already, I wouldn't necessarily call it a new thing, maybe just, another example.

I am pretty sure the crew that did the Ohio State - Illinois game in 2007 got suspended as well.

About time the SEC stopped blindly backing the officials like they always did and actually grew a pair and held them responsible.

Good shows being incompetent in your job does get your suspended even if you are a ref. MLB should look at this on how to handle gross stupidity.

The PAC 10 has punished a couple ref crews for bad calls.

Actually, I think this is a bad idea. This is just going to fuel the referee conspiracy stories. Quietly suspend them, but don't make a press release about it. Or better yet, fire them.

I think this is stupid- why suspend the whole crew? One guy threw a bullshite flag, the rest of the crew was doing their job. Suspend the refs that screwed up. It isn't like they all got together and got a rule wrong.

Hold the ref(s) that threw the flag in the UF/Ark game & LSU/UGA game responsible.

LOL WUT? The whole game was completely one sided as far as officiating. Did u forget about the offensive pass interference that wasn't called that if he hadn't interfered the arkansas guy would've intercepted and they would have won? They should be suspended longer. They almost single-handedly kept Florida undefeated. An unbiased officiating job and I think there is a 95% chance Florida loses that game. It is so hard for a team like Arkansas to get up for a game against Florida n Gainesville and win, which is exactly what would have happened if the guys in stripes wouldn't have been against them

The SEC didn't have a problem with that call

Only because there is still some subjectivity in that call. The personal foul call on the other hand, you can pretty much prove that it was wrong.

No doubt, suspend the guy that threw the flag.
