We had their asses whipped - don't remember what conf the officials were from - I believe it could have been a mixed crew from the Pac 8 and the SEC - I know they changed the rules a couple of years later and did away with mixed crews. That was a long drive back to Ponch that night.

That makes one of us.

Jackie Smith muffing that perfect pass in Super Bowl XIII, also in 1979, still pisses me off too.

It's amazing that things that happened when you are 10/11 years old still piss you off 30 years later.

I was at that game and the play should have never happened if the officials would have called the false start on not one but TWO USC lineman...

jordy's been talking about this all morning on his show. with all thats going on right now, is there really nothing better to talk about than a 30 year old face mask call?

his show this morning basically consists of a bunch of 60 year old men calling in and talking about how the usc line jumped before that play so it should have been irrelevant blah blah blah...

eta: not trying to be that a-hole who gripes about what people talk about on the rant. just amazed that a someone is devoting a show to it

I was there to and I was excited that the flag was for the false start. I never saw a face mask. It was a game turner. They would have had to punt or go for it.

I was there also. Had seats half way up on the 20 yard line. Also Benjie was in my Finance class on Monday morning and when he walked in we all stood up and clapped. He just shook his head, smiled and said thanks! Tom Tully, and offensive lineman and friend of mine told me how shook up Benjie was after the game. Good guys, both very successful.

Benjy was in my Western Civ class that semester too--everybody was patting him on the back. He seemed like a pretty humble guy.

This game is still my favorite game in my 30 year history of going to LSU games, as I was a freshman at the time.

Coolest quote from the article comes from Marcus Allen, and is a recent quote,

quote:

"I haven't been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I've played in, I've never been in anything like that, I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment."

Wow. I never heard that quote before.

ESPN needs to do a story on this game.

Here's the main article in the Times-Picayune about the LSU/USC game in 1979.

Part of what makes college football great is about history and tradition. For those of us who are a bit older than today's college student, the recent LSU/USC "rivalry" started in 1979, not in 2003. I'm sure you'll still be talking about the LSU/Florida game in 2007 in 20-30 years, whether you care to admit it or not.

John Ferguson, the voice of the Tigers at the time, said this memorable phrase that I will never forget..... "Charles White for another short gain.... it will be 2nd and 2." He struggled a little bit like all announceers do, but he was a good one. FUSC
