Making my first trip to Athens. Curious about parking and traffic. Is their any public/free parking in the same time zone as Sanfor Stadium? How bad is the traffic gonna be to and from the game?

Another question as well- preferably for UGA fans or LSU fans familiar with the area...Is it better to park/tailgate north of the stadium near downtown, or is there more action on the south side of the stdium on campus?? The wife and I are making our first trip to Athens, just want get as much of the experience as possible.

TIA

I think the tailgating is pretty good all over campus. If you are on campus and tailgate far away from the stadium there are buses that run on campus and will bring tailgaters to the stadium for free (this includes the RV area by the intramural fields). Getting a bus back to your tailgate will be the problem.

I attended UGA for grad school and have lived in Athens for 8 years so I can provide some good restaurant/bar recommendations.

Bars: The Globe, Trappeze, Gameday Pub, Highwire, Allgood (only before the game), The Winery, Copper Creek, Harry Bissett's Bar (not liking the food there).

Restaurants: The Globe, Trappeze and Copper Creek all have good bar food and variety.
Other places vary depending on food type and price.
Depalmas, Transmet, Last Resort, East West, Casa Mia, Farm 255 are all good and reasonably priced.
Cheaper and still good: 5 Guys Burgers, 5 Star Day Cafe, Taco Stand, Little Italy pizza, Mellow Mushroom, The Grill, Weaver D's, Clocked.

You can also look online at The Flagpole magazine and look for their restaurant guide for more info.

if you get there early enough, you can park for free on the street near the vet school fraternity houses. it is bit of a hike to the stadium, but plenty of good tailgating around the vet school.

I recommend Cali n Tito's for cheap south of the border fare and great atmosphere.

Personally I like The National, but it can be pricey.
I used to love Farm 255, but the last couple of times I made it there, it was less than perfect.

If you like sushi, then the place in the back of the Gameday Condos is good. Sorry, blanking on the name.

Also, for breakfast, love Big City Bread.

Traffic won't get really bad until you get close to the stadium. Travelling on Hwy 78/29/Broad St. will get slow at The Varsity (intersection of Broad and Milledge), but still move until you get into downtown area, near Lumpkin St (which takes you to Sanford Stadium).

Parking on side lots near town might be the good bet, as lots nearer the stadium are reserved (I'm not sure, as I park in a reserved lot [lucky me]), but I always see opposing fans parking near town. It's a haul back (uphill) after the game, but near downtown where the bars (and students) are.

Just watch for the drunk students. They're usually on their first month from home, and the alchohol usuallys isn't handled well (though it's a relatively few stupid ones, that the "un-stupid friends try to corral).

Have fun. We enjoy the LSU fans. They're good sports, fun to hang with, and love their Tigahs. That's our kind of opponent.

Went if 2004 we got beat 45 to 16 maybe can't remember and don't really care.

5 of us drove to Atlanta got a room and drove in that morning straight into campus they let you park on the grass there. Parked big Truck walked about as far as I do at LSU. No Problem.

Getting out was a different story took forever after you get off campus you sit in about 20 miles of cars going about 5mph and stop over and over again.

Campus was nice though and Stadium was real nice. Have a good time.

Another question- I have a pass for the Boggs Hall lot, and we won't be arriving in Athens until 11:30 or noon. Would it be easier to come in from the south (East Campus Rd. and north on Lumpkin) or to come in on Broad and head suoth on Lumpkin. Just wondering how bad the traffic is a few hours prior to the game. Thanks!

Just come in on Broad, and turn right onto Lumpkin. Traffic may start to slow a little at the bottom of the hill on Lumpkin, but it keeps moving usually pretty good.

Not a bad parking place, IMO.

You can always park off Milledge and hoof it. Did that a lot when I lived In Athens.
