Roth IRA's, savings account, 401 K a paycheck? Inspired by the "how much do you wanna make a year" thread

I max out my self-employed retirement plan every year. I don't do it on a paycheck basis but have to wait until my taxes are done and I know how much I can put into it. It' usually in the $20,000/year range, give or take.

Of course everyone's situation is different, but if not self employed an easy strategy to keep in mind is go up to match in 401K and max out Roth's...espcially if you think tax brackets will continue to sky rocket/cap. gains will increase/dividend tax will increase, which I due and if you can contribute to a Roth your probably not at your peak earnings thus no need to max out 401K
Strategy going forward in an atmosphere of what I think will trend on upsurd tax brackets is how do you keep it from Uncle Sam legally
Savings 3-6 cash reserve of fixed expenses is a good start tiering out your risk exposure and keep adding to it

i used to max out my 401k annually as well as my ira accounts, now i just max out my iras and try to save an extra $1000 per month or so. also pay down my mortgages significantly faster than my payment schedule.

Roth- 0
Still recovering from my wife deciding to go back to college at 35 yrs old. Will hopefully be back to max contributing this year.

I max a 401, a Roth IRA, and an HSA. And have damned little left over, I have to budget very carefully.

6% 401k...0% Roth IRA for now...I plan to start dumping some stuff in there after my first year.

HSA is a great vehicle especially if health is good
Remember you have till April 2010 to go back and fund your 2009 IRA just make sure you code it right (meaning if you contribute in 2010 code it 2009 contribution) even if you can only get a small amount in

I don't put any into a roth or traditional now. If I were to save for retirement I would maximize my employer's match if I could but my employer makes their contributions regardless of mine so I contribute 0 and take their money.
I'd like to have a large sum of cash and a steady income-producing investment portfolio before I start saving for retirement. I don't pay diddley in taxes right now and I don't want to have my money beyond reach in another downturn. It's been maddening to have money tied up in two IRAs when there were so many great deals out there the past year.

You can use it for anything health. I use it all the time for OTC meds and vitamins.

But 10% of not a whole lot is even less than a whole lot, so...
