Off-topic question for the Wine drinkers of the Money Board

Admins, please leave this on the Money Talk Board, I don't want OT level responses (this might even be wishful thinking for MT).
I need to buy a NICE bottle of wine as a present for the doctor who, long story short, allowed me to have a kid, who is one his way in November. I told him that if it happened I would buy him a nice bottle of wine. Obviously, this is important to me.
This doctor is known to be a wine connoisseur and keeps a free-standing wine cooler/chiller in his office (where he meets his pateints) and knows his stuff about wine.
I am not much of a wine drinker, so advice will be very appreciated.

How much are you willing to spend? Do you have any idea what type of wine he prefers? This would be helpful to know. For example, if he's a Burgundy collector, you don't want to get him a bottle of some blowsy California cabernet.

Have absolutely no idea and don't know a way to find this out unless I called him. Thought about calling a couple of the wine shops around his office to see if he patronizes them.

If he has an assistant, secretary, or nurse, I'd start there. If you can't find this out, I'd suggest a bottle of Ridge Monte Bello. It's a Bordeaux Blend from California that will please someone who likes young California wines, but It's balanced and can also age for 30+ years, so even if he likes lighter wines he will likely appreciate this. If you're in Baton Rouge or New Orleans go to Martin's, I've seen the 2005, which is a great vintage for that wine, in BR. I think it's around $150. Good luck and congratulations!

Have you thought about calling his nurse (or medical assistant)? If you tell her why you're doing it and you'd like to surprise the Doc, I bet she (he?) would enjoy helping you. I did that with my cancer surgeon and it worked well. Good luck! And congrats on the bambino!

He runs a very small office and my interaction with his assistant has not left me with a strong impression that her opinion could be relied upon.

If you give Silver Oak to a real wine collector you will do him, and yourself a disservice. If someone gave me a bottle, I'd appreciate the sentiment, then pass the bottle along to a fellow wine collector as a gag gift.

After reading papaboze's response, I am not sure I am qualified to give thoughts on this, but I say go to your local wine shop and ask about their Opus One.

Faust Cabernet. If you can find it, it should be about $60 and blows many wines away that cost twice that.

if he's a collector, then you probably shouldn't give him wine at all...kind of like when relatives give me golf balls as a gift.

Normally, I would agree, but the wife and I told him that we would buy him a bottle of wine if it worked and he said he "definately wouldn't turn it down".

Jesus you guys know how to overcomplicate shite.
What I would do is try to get him something a little less known. Silver Oak, Opus One and the like are just too default and won't show much thought on your part other than you parting ways with a Ben Franklin.
A real wine enthusiast will enjoy trying something new and he probably won't care that much about the price.

quote:+1 ForeLSU has a point, but on the other hand, showing someone that you know what they're passionate about and have taken the time to really put some thought into a gift directed at that passion would be a great gesture of appreciation. Silver Oak and Opus are typically given as gifts because they are two of the more expensive wines in any given wine shop, and they're very prominent on restaurant wine lists. I know no collector who buys either wine. Mauritavius ir correct that someone who appreciates wine would appreciate an inexpensive bottle if it's unique, has a story, and is well made. They key is how much thought you put into it.

Far Niente cabernet
ETA: you'd probably get some good, non OTish answers on the food board.

I think the best answer is go to a wine store that you know is good. Ask around for one that fits that description.
Find a good person in the store and ask for a special/unique bottle in your price range.
