In five years how much weight will this degree hold? Also what are some good sites to learn more about the oil and gas industry?

thanks

I would think until we find another energy source that can replace oil, pet.e. majors should continue to do well. Also geologists who want to go the oil route.

Just get a chemical engineering degree and you're set.

ETA: I'd say you would be good with a petro degree for at last the next 50 years.

Any engineering degree is a good thing.

I agree with Bengal. Anything in engineering will always be in demand. People just do not understand how many different products use petroleum besides gasoline. We will be using petroleum for centuries to come.

Petroleum Engineers are making between 80 and 100K straight out of a BS degree. Its hard to predict the future of our economy or the price of oil, but I wouldn't expect that number to slip. With the recent drop in oil price in the last year, salaries have not decreased but openings have.

Plastics are made, in part, from petroleum. Worst case scenario, you'll still be fine. IMO, oil will likely be a major power source for the 20 to 50 years.

Factors to look at: Are other countries producing Petro Engineers to undercut you? Doesn't seem to be a problem, like it is with computer programming, etc. Even civil engineers have vastly more competition.

So, yes, it should still be a good degree to hold for quite some time. You may be enticed to relocate abroad, though.

Its not a bad idea.

You can also get an MBA and that would diversify you for anything.

Not really. Companies aren't dumping many new grads and they are still hiring (at 80-100K per year). They aren't begging for graduates like a year ago, but it aint that bad. I work closely with these graduates and companies and it is still good; salaries haven't seemed to taper off at all.

The land department is the only one really suffering major cuts. Petroleum engineering is a great field and the oil companies are still paying well over 80k for bachelors. There is such a generation gap in the industry they have no choice but to hire considering the amount of employees that are about to retire. I know plenty of guys who just graduated or are graduating next year and all have jobs lined up. Even when we do discover an alternative energy with hydrocarbon capabilities it will take decades to transition.

Anything in the petroleum industry. I wouldn't expect a PetE degree to be worth too much outside it.

I thought engineering degrees are very versatile.

Some are probably more versatile than others. But any engineering degree will get you in the door at most large production firms.

Don't expect Procter & Gamble to be impressed by a PetE degree.

well I probably taught him. Like I said, the number of offers has scaled down some but the salaries haven't. Most of them are still getting offers (I am a little surprised by your friend), but I bet he gets one soon especially with the market upturn.
