Bay Leaf Indian Restaurant in Baton Rouge

Read an interesting review of the restaurant in a local publication, going to make my first trip there soon. Do most people here go for the lunch buffet, or for dinner?
Would also like to get some feedback from Ewdij and some of the other East Indian posters.

Guy I work with is from India and he eats there all the time. He said it was more authentic than India's. I know he enjoys it. He said he liked the nan there more than the other restaurants in BR even though he said it still isnt exactly what he gets back home.
ETA should have added that he never gets the buffet and sais he always gets one of the Tandori or Tikka

I've been there a few times. I've probably been exposed to Indian food as much as anyone other than an Indian or perhaps Mile High.
Bay Leaf is solid. It can be expensive if you're going alone. If you're going with company I'd recommend getting the Pori as your bread. I haven't tried anything there that I didn't care for but my favorite dishes thus far are the Sagwala chicken and chicken korma. They have some dosas (crepes essentially) on the South Indian portion of the menu that are pretty good. If you can get one with the tomato chutney I'd recommend that as well.
As far as dessert goes the kheer (rice pudding) is good (although it's a tad strong on the cardamom IMO) as well as the carrot dessert and the pistatio ice cream. I'm not a big fan of the rasmali or the gulab juman...but I don't care for those much anywhere so that's not a knock on Bay Leaf.
It's also pretty solid for lunch...just figured I'd throw out a few dinner plates I liked.

We usually go for the buffet, the cuisine holds up very well on a steam table. But thats not the reason, I can't remember the names of what I like because they are about 25 syllables, but if I see it on the buffet I get get some.
Someone posted on here a few weeks ago that this was the best restaurant in BR, that's a stretch but it may be the spiciest and tastiest. I think the buffet is $11.95, a bargain for the quality. Of course Golden Corral is across the street for some people(not you Afreaux).

I've only been there once, for the lunch buffet for $12. It was quite good. What pissed me off was that the Golden Corral restaurant parking lot next door was full, while Bay Leaf was nearly empty. Baton Rouge folks are retarded.

the restaurant is great imo. its a little more expensive than india's but the flavors are bolder, exactly what you want when you crave indian food. ive gone quite a few times. i recommend the lunch buffet to get an idea of what flavors you like. its the better bang for your buck because you get to sample everything.
but they have never served my favorite dinner dish on the buffet so i go there at night sometimes. i get something with spinach or the dosa with spring vegetables.

I would imagine that most folk may not be familiar with Indian cuisine. For all the Bollywood movies that I've watched, I've probably eaten Indian only three or four times (and only at India's buffet on Essen).
That's why I wanted to get feedback from people with Indian cuisine knowledge and experience. Just like with a few Mexican dishes, I like the fact that there are dishes with an emphasis on spices that don't come off "spicy" hot. Indian food seems to be very underrated.

I've been once, and I got the Chicken Jalfrezi. I really liked it. It was similar to a chicken stir fry with vegetables. The sauce was great.

out of all the places in baton rouge ive been to, which is only three. bay leaf is the best without a doubt.
went to this indian place in san antonio once which was the best indian i ever had. guess ill have to go to the country sometime.

this is why i love bay leaf. its the best indian ive had in louisiana for sure. they have spicy food without it necessaryily being so pepper hot that you cant taste the other ingredients. and its fresh.

The korma is the best I've ever had anywhere. Anything from the tandoor is awesome. The lunch buffet is OK, but really dinner menu items is where they shine. They even have lots of South Indian vegetarian options, which is uncommon.

Damn...you're missing out man. Since you have somewhat limited exposure to the cuisine I'd recommend trying the buffet. You'll get a nice chance to sample a lot of the dishes. You'll be hooked in no time

So, I went there for lunch yesterday. I could have eaten their bread and mint chutney alone and would have been very happy. The butter chicken is to kill for.
Everything was outstanding, except the rice pudding which was too soupy.

Price of a weekend buffet and drink seemed a tad steep ($18.49 before tip) speaking of buffets in general, but I'd say that the meal was more than worth it.
There wasn't a single thing on the buffet that I would consider sub-par. The mutton, the chicken dishes, the eggplant, the bread, the complimentary dhosa, everything was excellent. I didn't even realize Indians were big on tamarind (I'm used to tamarindo drinks and snacks at Mexico places), so the tamarind chutney over a rice cake was money.
This is easily the best buffet I've been to in Baton Rouge.

they consider themselves fine dining. its cheap for fine dining. i find that if you are not drinkings, its about 25 per head (including a non-alcoholic bev & tip).

I had second thoughts about eating there when I walked in, because I was dressed pretty casual. I didn't expect the interior to be as fancy as it was, particularly for a buffet.
A bunch of young Indian guys showed up, all dressing casual, so I didn't feel as funny about it. I'll be back there this week, it's a real disappointment that more people don't know about this restaurant.
