2003, 2007, and 2009?

does the 2009 talent level come close to 2003 defensively?, does it come near the overall talent of 2007? i know its too soon to be sure, but those 2 teams imo, had rare, amazing talent that will be extremely difficult to match

Hmmmm I dont think the defense will be as good as 2003 and 2007 but it will be a hell of a lot better than last year 100000004152 percent better

No way. Huge diff in qb experience.

Talent wise, yes. Production on the field, possibly. We'll have to wait and see.

Agreed on experience, but what about talent?

03 defense was very talented, but it seems the talent level is on par for 08. Everything else remains to be seen.

Brian Lazare from rivals Tigerbait.com doesn't think so. Or so he said on rivals radio last week. I think our Dline is better then people think. The qb is a question but we have a lot of talent and experience. The rest of the skill positions are solid. Not having a fullback is a concern but i think the tightends will fill in and do a good job. However it could limit playcalling. Our o line should be ok, but the center of the line is going to have to step it up to fill big herm and b helms' shoes and get a good push for the run. I think the young guys come in and do a good job. The secondary is solid now that they have all had some time back there and the competiton should help. So to answer your question. We're not as deep as those teams, but we have some young talent that have great potential and if called upon will need to step it up. Similar to baseball and end of the year (tournament)pitching. If they do it we repeat, and if they don't we fall short in the end. I'm the eternal optimist so I say they get it done.

I think it will be better than 2003's but not 2007's. In 2007 we had Bo Pilini, Glenn Dorsey, Ricky Jean-Francois, and Craig Steltz. Even better than when we had Laron Landry and Will Muschamp back in 2003. 2007's defense could probably even match 1958's defense. In 2008 we lost all of them except Ricky Francois. This year, we got John Chavis as a defense Coordinater, and an NFL recruiter, so even though we lost Rickey Francois, we are bound to replace our shattered defense pretty easily. The future looks bright. Brighter than last year at least.

Well, that's kinda retarded since the '03 defense--and team--was much better than the '07 one.

Disagree with 2007 being better than 2003....
Despite two being 3OT games, the '07 defense gave up 24 points or more in SEVEN of the 14 games (including that many against both UK and ARK in regulation)....
I realize 2007 variables like Dorsey's injury, and an overall higher talent level in the conference, but how can you compare it to giving up 24 points in ONE game (55-24 win over ARK) and giving up an average of just 11 (ELEVEN!!) points a game in 2003....
Not even close to me....

2003 we had Webster, Spears, Gay, Hill, Laron, Travis Daniels, Lavalais, Prude, Lionel T... and they were all being coached D by Saban + Muschamp.
I'd say it is very unreasonable to think it will be better than that group. It won't even be close.

2007's defense was porous as hell toward the end of the year and could not stop anyone. The Auburn and Arkansas games, specifically, were awful. Please do not compare them to 2003 again.

JJ has more talent than Flynn and Mauck combined. But Mauck had 7 starts and seccg game experience. He was also 23 or 24 after a minor league baseball stint. Flynn was a 5th year senior. I see plenty of leadership intangibles in JJ from watching him live at the PeachBowl. He is gonna be a good one, I don't know about mnc good this year though.

The reason why 2007's defense went down hill was because Glenn Dorsey was injured.

Talent wise. Equal. Experience wise 2009 will be superior. 2-Senior running backs, 1 possibly a 1st or 2nd round draft choice, the other will be drafted. Trindon Holliday comes in with world class speed. A young quarterback who has proven that he is a very talented runner and passer. An all SEC tight end, along with another 1st round draft choice at WR. At least one 1st rounder on the offensive line, and at least one more who will be drafted. And the no. 1 talent coming out of high school in Russel Sheppard who will be a gamer and difference maker in some capacity. And another super frosh in R. Randle who is a talent at WR. The defense will be better because of the coaching. The talent showed in the man handling of GT in the bowl game. This is gonna be a damned strong football team.

2003 def. was better than 2007 def. in my opinion. 2007 team won it all with alot of heart! (ex. Jacob Hester). I can only hope that this years team is just as good as either team. I'm an optimist...I say we win it all!!!!!

2009 will be better than 2008 for sure, but I think 2010 and 2011 the team will be BEASTLY -- possibly like we haven't seen before

Maybe so, but the senior leadership should be as good as the 2007 team. It means a lot to have players who know what it takes to get there and knows how it feels to not perform at the level. Leadership! Mental toughness, experience, the talent is there!
