So espn signs the biggest contract in collegiate sports history with the conference and does not have a BIG SEC rivalry matchup listed yet???They are probably just waiting closer to the season, but it is dissapointing to see LSU not listed her yet. I know they will pick up a few, but it would be nice to know earlier this year rather than the week before(helps with tailgaiting preperation). Here is the ESPN schedule for the upcoming season... I think the LSU/WASH game would be a good way to start. https://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3901962[/link]
Also, good to see UF and Auburn listed at night although it may not stick b/c LSU also has Ar kansas listed on sat nite at 7 on the lsusports.net schedule

For the 89257238th time. CBS still has 1st pick for the 2:30 game almost every weekend. ESPN will have every other game on one of their networks (national or regional) at their desired time.

a lot of times games on tv aren't set until the week of the game

ESPN only has one first pick all year.

CBS should announce their games earlier. For people coming from out of town, it makes a big differnce btw 2:30 and 7 or 8:00.

They aren't really worried about you.....they are worried about ratings..if they announce games now..and it turns out both teams suck...it would be stupid for them to be stuck with that game.

I thought they had more than just one. Not saying you are wrong though. But I thought they had 2 or 3 for some reason. Is it a specific week or does CBS dictate what week they can have first pick.

12 days notice isn't enough? Only once or twice a season is it a 6 day notice.

I thought ESPN might get to pick two games first as well. However, whether its one or two, before the season CBS picks one game that they want to televize, and then ESPN gets to pick the one game they want and that is how they "pick first." They don't wait til the week of the game to do it. Just as an example, say before the year ESPN picks LSU-Florida, then that will be the one game they have priority over CBS for. The rest of the year CBS will pick the week or two before the game and ESPN will have second choice.

I'm almost positive they just have one. CBS has to choose the Primetime game to begin the year as well but can wait on their other telecast picks, aside from the one ESPN has rights to pick first.

Exactly, like I said, CBS picks its one "untouchable" game before the season (usually their primetime game) and then ESPN gets to pick one game. The rest of them are decided during the season with CBS picking first.

You would think:
1) CBS would jump on the primetime, night-game bandwagon. It is very popular in the south and on the west coast these days. CBS needs to have more.
2) With ESPN having a contract with the SEC now, wouldn't they want or demand more than just 1 first pick per season? If CBS would have more night games and ESPN would get more 1st picks, we could find LSU playing at night a whole lot more.

I'll shoot myself if we have to play another big game with Verne Lundquist reporting.
I swear he hates us, and we always do horrible when on CBS.

Do you see a BIG Big Ten rivalry matchup listed yet? A BIG Pac 10 rivalry matchup? A BIG ACC or Big 12 rivalry matchup after late September?
Basically, this is the schedule for the early, early games and the Sunday-Friday games.
What surprises me is the omission of UConn. It seemed like every other week they were on ESPN on like Friday or Sunday night.

I'm just gonna tell it like it is, and I'm one of the biggest LSU/SEC football fans there is.
SEC football is mostly regional. There is no marquee, big-name team that draws big ratings consistently. Sure, the unbelievably big game will be a big draw. But if CBS went primetime with, say, a Tennessee/Alabama game and went head-to-head with ESPN/ABC's primetime Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, or Ohio State, they'd get their asses kicked in most of the major television markets in the United States. Because, as you may or may not know, there aren't really any big television markets outside of Atlanta in SEC country.

no he doesn't, and no we don't.. what he does do is get on the bandwagon for whatever team is looking to challenge for the National Title.. which i dont really have a problem with.. and GD is as good as anybody at what he does..

Whats the point of ESPN having a big contract if they can't have first pick?
Posted on 4/9/09 at 3:15 pm to scrimpdog
Because EVERY single SEC game is now guaranteed to be broadcast on one of their cable networks. Not to mention the deals they got in other sports as well.
