I would offer this, when talking about the Saints don't a lot of people say "we"??
If that's the case then WTF? Associate yourselves with LSU please. I can't say I like bandwagoners but shite I'll take as many LSU fans as WE can get.

Mike Golic is in no position to tell anyone what they can and can't say. As a LSU alum, it bothers me more when students organize vulgar chants at a football game than it does when someone who didn't graduate from LSU gets caught up in the moment and says, "We won". This whole topic barely separates itself from the grammar police who go around correcting punctuation errors. Since people don't walk around with their degrees tatooed on their forehead, its hard for "real" fans to know when someone should or shouldn't say "we", isn't it?
As for Saints fans, and fans of other pro teams whose communities were essentially held hostage under the threat of losing the franchise if government subsidies (stadiums, etc...) weren't provided, "we" have paid, are paying, and are scheduled to continue paying for the right to use the term whether "we" want to or not.

I was thinking about this topic the other day. Glad somebody brought it up.
I graduated from ULM, but have been a season ticket holder at LSU for 7 years. Got the season tickets the year before LSU won the Nat'l Champ. in 2003. I always make a point to say "they" when referring to LSU, for the simple fact that I didn't attend LSU.
It really annoys me when my friends, who have no affiliation whatsoever with LSU, refer to LSU as "we".

You don't have to have a degree to be an alum. You just have to have attended.

I attended Mizzou because of location to family. I got accepted into LSU, not hard to get accepted into that school.lol. But I didn't want to live 12hrs away from Family and don't care to live in Louisiana for 4yrs. You proved my point exactly. So you didn't want to attend LSU for whatever personal reason and I am not dogging your decision to each his own. But you chose not to go to LSU and then try to claim LSU in the same breathe. That doesn't make any sense. I am not saying that you don't love LSU or aren't a fan but to be able to claim affiliation to the university outside of being a die hard, you should have gone here.

For the record I am a Saints season ticket holder and still don't say we when it comes to pro sports teams. So no one can say we when it comes to the saints
as for LSU
You didn't go to LSU, you can't say we, get over it.

I don't know about other schools or other fan traditions. For what it's worth, here's my criteria:
1.) Obviously, if you played varsity sports at LSU, you can say "We", when referring to LSU.
2.) If you hold a degree, associates, bachelor's, graduate or professional, from LSU, you can say "We".
3.) If you attended LSU, but did not complete your degree requirements, and do not actively support other schools' athletic programs (or do so in a lesser role than you do LSU), you can say, "We".
4.) If you are from Louisiana, or from a family with strong roots in Louisiana, and have never attended any college, but support LSU athletics above all others, you can say "We".
Other than that, I'm going to have to say that it's a case-by-case situation. That includes my son, who is attending Louisiana Tech. He did attend LSU-A for a semester and does support LSU athletics. However, once he earns that LaTech degree, I may have to tell him that he's not a member of the LSU family.
You pays your money and you takes your chances....

But if I'm that exact same scenario, but go to a different college, I can't say "we", but if I just wouldn't have gone to college, I'd be allowed to?

I don't agree with this one. The other ones I do.
I think you are part of the LSU community if you ever held an LSU email address (or registration number before email).
For Christ sake, it's a school. If you didn't go to school there, how are you a part of it? WITHOUT THE STUDENTS, THERE IS NO TEAM. I don't care how much money ticket holders pump into it.

It's a part of the LSU system, so you are part of the LSU community.
I just don't understand what the hell some people's logic here is. Many of you are saying because you support athletics, you can say "We". What about those of us who actually give a shite about the University itself, and what it means to US. You are not included in that, and never will be.
US and WE are interchangeable. FAN and WE are not.

I agree a person is free to say whatever the hell they want. Sometimes a word is hollow, and I am contending that there is no merit to someone saying "we" whose only connection to the University is sport entertainment.
