Robert Royal's TD catch in OT against Tenn in 2000----turning point of football program

i think saban and jimbo getting booed at haftime of the 2001 ole miss game, then eventually losing was more of a turning point. Everything totally changed after that.

Earthquake Game

This moment embodies LSU excellence in athletic performance, as well as fan involvement. Everybody knows about it, too; therefore, people remember how avid of fans LSU fans are.

Mostly because that one play won the game and put LSU football in the major national spotlight. That was our first real big game of the year, college gameday was there, record crowd, all the eyes in the nation were on LSU. and we came up big that day. to me that play represents the ascending of LSU to a national powerhouse.

The UGA win verified that LSU was a team to be reckoned with in the SEC that year i'll agree with that. But, all eyes in the nation were on LSU in the National Championship Game also played in the national spot light in front of a record crowd. Nat'l Championship > Home SEC win over Top10 team...especially when we drubbed them in second meeting in Atlanta later that year.

Not that I didn't go nuts after UGA win...did anyone see Trev Alberts before the game?? Still a huge UGA knobslobber.

If by "moment" you mean single plays/moments that put LSU on the map nationally, I humbly offer my short list:

1. Cannon's Halloween return against Ole Miss.
2. Warren Morris' walk-off HR to win CWS.
3. Bluegrass Miracle.
4. Clock ticking down to zero in '97 win against #1 Florida in Tiger Stadium.
5. Chris Jackson/Shaq performance against Loyola-Marymount

Even though we lost, I understand the '79 game against USC was a more defining game than the FLA game. This game put LSU back on the maps.

Nah, I wouldn't say that at all - the team that year ended up losing a few more close games after that.

USC '79 was the greatest game in Tiger Stadium ever, but I would never think of it as a defining moment.

Warren Morris totally signifies the defining moment - even if you can't stand baseball.

If so then it would have to be this...

10. LSU is only Triple Double SEC Champs (not sure if true, guy at work said it)

And, yes, it is true.

And don't forget the movie "Everybody's All American", based on the Cannon legend---a legend created by that run back.

Not so! The story was fiction and actually based in North Carolina. The similarity between the character and Billy Cannon and LSU was purely coincidental. The producers just happened to pick LSU as the site to film the movie.

MtT69 is correct !

I was in the movie. The fiction from NC was
acclimated to La. both in scenery and in certain character development. The producers didn't mind the mythologizing of " Bill Cannon " without using him or his name !

The film was shot @ LSU in the fall of 87 & spring of 88 ! Like most movies , both fiction & non-fiction , there are a lot of inaccuracies !
The college is portrayed as Louisiana University
or University of Louisiana ! (BR)

The filming at Tiger Stadium took place against Bama. The student body & other fans dressed like the late 50's !

The NC was in '58. There was no punt return in the movie. Plus LU was playing Ga. in the NC Sugar Bowl game (which they did not have back then) in the movie.
Trust me, it was fiction.

Yeah I'd have to add the 1st victory over a #1 team in Tiger Stadium in 97.

It did put LSU on the cover of Sports Illustrated

For football, I'd say it was Rohan Davey coming in and lighting up Georgia Tech in the second half of the 2001 peach bowl. From that time on, it's gotten better and better.

I am with PokerPlayingTiger and still think this feat is the defining moment in LSU Sports history.

Some people think this isn't a moment but an era.

That was one of those moments, that I will never ever forget! I can still hear the cling of the bat! And just hoping that the Miami outfielder could not get to it.

Well, your list contains several entries that don't qualify as "moments".

Nonetheless, I'd have to say that since football drives everything else at the LSU Athletic Department, and since you can pretty much draw a demarcation line in LSU football between "before Saban" and "after Saban", with all due respect to everyone who came before Saban arrived, I'd have to say that the most defining moment in LSU sports history was the moment that Saban became LSU's head football coach.

Also a little known fact is that Dr. Marty Broussard, LSU's long time trainer, is actually the inventor of "Gatorade". He developed it and shared it with his fellow trainers and the sorry bastards from Gainesville profited from it. Supposedly, Dr. Broussard's mixture didn't taste very good and the Fla. trainers developed it to what it later became.

I think you called me a bonehead dumbass, or something similar for a previous post. I'm not going to call you a name, but you're being loose with your rendition. Dr. Broussard did develop a gatorade type supplement, which if I'm not mistaken, eventually "10-K" got involved with, but I wouldn't want to be on record as claiming that Dr. Broussard invented "Gatorade" and someone else stole it.

Take it for what it's worth.
