Has anyone taken the train from Hammond or New Orleans to Chicago? I plan on making a trip of to the shite hole they call Wrigley Field with some of my friends (all cubs fans except Swamie) this summer. We’re going to catch a Reds/ Cubs series. Is there a bar on this train? Would you recommend it? Any Bad or Good experiences? Thanks in advance.

I never took the train from New Orleans to Chicago....I've only done from Syracuse to chicago...but my friends that met me took from n.o. to Chicago...it wasn't bad...I kn ow they have a cart with food and stuff...not sure about alcohol because I just brought my own bottle on with me.

Only problem you will run into..and happens 99% with Amtrak...delays....which makes a longer trip even longer.

Just get a group of friends in the car and drive. I've drove everytime from B.R. to Chicago..not a bad drive

I did the train for Hammond to Chicago, and I can not stress to you enough how horrible it was. I had a double club car room, which is the best accommodations u can get and it was still one of the worst experiences of my life.

They never run on time, so be prepared to wait at the station in Hammond, and Chicago for hours. You can't sleep at all because its so loud with the train horn, mixed with the noise from the tracks. And it shakes all over the place.

Do yourself a huge favor and fly.

I agree. I have a friends of mine who traveled on the one from Jackson to NOLA as well as Oxford to NOLA and both have said never again. It took 8 hrs on the train that would have taken like 4. He also said it ran horribly behind schedule. Just take a road trip, draw straws for the Designated Driver and everyone else gets to get ripped on the way up.....

The American train system is a massive piece of shite compared to every other industrialized country. It sucks because is Europe and Australia, the train is fricking awesome and relatively cheap. In the US it's not even worth it because of delays and shite

Just about everyone will tell you that Amtrak sucks. And at face value it does. But if you have the time to waste and are open to a different kind of experience it can be a great time. I fly alot and never end up talking to anyone on a plane. Every time I've taken a train, I've met incredibly interesting people.

How the hell can train be delayed that much? Airports and fights I understand, weather, etc. Unless there is a train wreck/derailed train, and those are 1 in a million? What else would slow it down?

I believe that a large majority of the railroad tracks (maybe 95%+) are now owned by the three major commercial railroads - CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. Amtrack trains run on the same tracks but don't get priority, but if they are going through an area and a freight happens to be going through the same area at the same time - guess who gets delayed and who gets the go ahead?

our return trip from chicago back to hammond the train was delayed almost an entire 24 hours. Just had to sit at the fricking station the whole time, because the have no idea exactly when its gonna get there. Just to further stress this, thats not a place u want to be stuck at for that long.

If you never listen to anything else anyone ever tells u on a message board, listen to this, dont get on that train

My first Amtrak experience was a 13 hour trek from Atlanta to New Orleans.

It was by far the worst vacation ever. We actually had someone meet us in Slidell, got off their instead of NOLA, ate dinner at a restaurant, then drove to NOLA to pick up our luggage... and still somehow beat the train to the New Orleans station.

Never again.

I've taken the train twice and had a blast both times. Once was to Tuscaloosa for an Alabama game and once to Memphis for an Ole Miss game. Ice chests are allowed on the train. The only problem I see is that Chicago would be an overnight trip. Sleeper cars are available at a higher price. There is also a dining car if you want some overpriced steaks or fish.

My recommendation is to fly. Never take a train trip over 8 hours.
