The Democrats and the media were okay to run cover for Swalwell. His exploits were widely known around town and everyone was okay with it. Swalwell's sin was that he dared run for governor of California against billionaire Tom Steyer. Steyer had the financial means to expose Swalwell for who he was. It wasn't that he got caught, it was that someone with enough clout and money e posed him.
Swalwell was very popular with the Democrats and the media because he blew one of the loudest horns in the Trump impeachment talks. He was a darling and was not afraid of any camera he could find. Now the media are interested in the rape allegations story and political friends and peers are distancing.
Swalwell's accusers can actually provide details and remember his predatory practices. Not all accusers can do this.
Swalwell should be spending the rest of his days in prison. His list of victims left in his predatory wake is extensive.

Someone says that he was well aware that this might come out during his political campaign and he reportedly didn't give a shite because he felt he was untouchable.

Right. And this is what really pisses me off. Because you know that if the Democrats know, so did the Republicans. Nobody gave a shite. Not until he became a nuisance.
I am more convinced than ever that they ALL have kompromat like this out there of some sort. I'm not saying that they're all rapists, but they all have leverage held over their heads to keep them in line. Which is why 380 of them voted to kill the bill meant to expose the sex pests in Congress.
