Did Rory get an "unfair" advantage in practicing at ANGC before the Masters?

Thought this might be worth it's own thread after seeing the opinion go as far as making it to First Take today (Stephen A brings it up at the 3:20-ish mark of the video):
People are apparently calling it an unfair advantage that he took it upon himself to go and play ANGC multiple times over the last month (flying up on a private jet from Jupiter, FL) and passed on playing in other PGA tournaments to do so.
Why is this so controversial? Is it an advantage? Sure. But an unfair one? No, the dude earned the right to go play there as much as he wants leading up to the tournament. Other champions have had that opportunity to do so.
This just seems like such a silly argument when how the course plays is just one part of preparing for a tournament.

He earned that right by winning last year.

One of the dumber narratives to come out of this week
Posted on 4/13/26 at 2:21 pm to BluegrassBelle
It has nothing to do with being a champion…..
Every single participant is allowed to go and play without a member once they receive their invitation
This entire “story” is dumb as shite

Which just further proves my point that it's stupid.
I'm sure folks will argue that not everyone can hop on a private jet to fly back and forth, but if you're not playing any other tournaments in the last couple of weeks what stops someone (and most of the contenders have the means) to just get a short term rental in Augusta and do it?

I don’t think it’s unfair, but I do think he’s an a-hole for flaunting it all weekend

What did he flaunt?
Every single invitee had the option to play leading up to it exactly like he did. He simply chose that route where others didn’t

Was he just supposed to lie about his prep when he was asked?

It makes him an a-hole for talking about how much he practiced and prepared for the event? Tiger has done stuff like this his entire career

Yea no story at all especially considering once you earn the invite you can do it, would be a non story even if only champions could do it.

Thinks the equivalent to asking
“Is it unfair Rory has a Taylor made golf ball?”
Quite literally everyone had the same option

Any big name can go there all they want before Masters
A member will sponsor them.

I've been having a hard time figuring out where to land on this issue, so it's nice to finally hear the opinions of esteemed golf experts Steven A Smith and Brian Windhorst.

He and anyone else only needs the member sponsor if bringing a guest

most of the really good guys get there as much as they can to practice. His only advantage would be over golfers who don't live as close as he does and can fly in and out in a day

They cant show up every day for a month before tournament.

Exactly. Tiger was known to camp out there for weeks before the Masters. Everyone thought that was a great storyline about how competitive he was, somehow it's now the other way around.

Michael Kim said nobody is told you can’t play unlimited times, but every just kinda feels it. But he made it very clear once you are invited no matter who you are you get a phone number, you call it, and you can go play
ETA: kisner said Rory played 4 or 5 times leading up to the tournament
