Luggage on Overnight Layover?

Our family just booked our summer vacation flights. However, this year, both our flights in and out will have an overnight layover. In that situation, will we have access to our checked luggage? Or should we just share a carry on and put our next day travel clothes in it?
I travel fairly often, but have never booked a flight with an overnight layover.

I am in a similar situation as you. We are packing a carry on with clothes as we are not expecting to retrieve our bag.

You will not have access to them.
How did this happen? I'm curious what kind of destination you could be transiting to in order for this to have been required.

Isn’t that airline policy dependent? I had an overnight layover several years ago in Miami on AA and we had to retrieve our checked luggage then recheck the next day.

That should only happen if you're transferring to an airline with which doesn't have an interline agreement with the one you checked your bags with (Think flying in on Southwest, and transferring to a United flight.) The interline agreement is why I can check my bag in Houston on United, and have it follow me through to my destination on Lufthansa, for instance.
I've had one connection in LAX (international) where I was forced to get my bag, schlep it over a terminal, and check it back in (both flights were United.) But it only happened once in 20 years of flying.
OP, have you not tried asking the airline?

Of course not. Checked bags are checked bags. It would be chaos if they allowed everyone to access checked bags. They are stowed away. Bring a small carry on bag, as well, to accommodate layover.

It depends on the length of your overnight layover. Under 12-16ish hours they will keep your bag, if longer than that you will claim them on arrival at your layover and re-check the following day.

We are flying to the Caribbean. There are limited flights in and out. We were going to drive to Dallas at night and leave first thing in the morning, but then we realized we could fly there the previous night for the same price. We'd rather fly in than drive. Basically, it just worked out that way.

Sleeping in the airport? If not, didn't you increase the price of travel with lodging?

We have a layover at Heathrow. We got a hotel room.

No - Our inital plan was to drive to DFW and stay at the airport hotel. The flight out is at 7:00. I realized that we can take an evening flight to DFW for the same price. I'd still need the hotel either way.

Could you call the airline and find out? That would be my first thought.

I've had flights like this where I didn't check, but I remember other people saying they just brought a small overnight bag since they wouldn't be able to access their checked bags. But I would confirm with the airline.
Done this back in day when flying from west coast going east, wanted to leave late afternoon/early evening but couldn't find a direct flight and didn't want to take a red eye connection. Would connect into Dallas or Houston and arrive at 11 pm. Cab/shuttle to airport hotel, sleep from 12-6, cab/shuttle back to airport, 7:30 am flight back to NO or BR, straight to work. I don't sleep well on planes and felt much better the next day doing it this way.
I get doing this for a morning flight to Central America where you can't arrive early enough on a connecting flight. Does seem like a lot to do coming back (could just stay an extra night and do both flights the next day?) unless you have schedule constraints.
