China = Rare Earths, while America = Oil

Our “trade truce” with them runs out in 8 months.
We had ZERO leverage in negotiations.
Now…we will see.
FWIW, access to rare earths is pivotal in regards to pretty much anything electronic…including defense systems. I noted this aspect years ago. IF Trump put all of this in motion to counter China’s virtual monopoly with one upon which THEY are dependent, then…

Access to rare earth elements isn't our issue. Rather, it is the processing of those elements. Unfortunately, China does most of that dirty work for us.

China has stolen a majority of Africas minerals w/o even firing a shot or taking out any leaders. Just gave them shite, high interest loans, that they could never pay back.

Rare earths arent all that rare, Japan has a recent discovery offshore that dwarfs all known previous finds, its the processing as someone mentioned above.
Get the tree huggers out the way and process baby process

upon returning to office in 2025, the Trump administration took immediate, aggressive actions to establish domestic rare earth processing, investing over $1.6 billion in firms like USA Rare Earth and MP Materials. These measures, including executive orders and Department of Defense funding, aim to build a secure "mine-to-magnet" supply chain, reducing dependence on China.

Correct. They refine most of it. Long term our plan is to nearshore some of that to Mexico.

We can do that here as well (even though it is dirty).
Actually making the magnets WAS an issue (China bought Magnaquench back in the day, and that set us behind big time).
Those issues have been resolved, and the Mountain Pass is churning out rare earths at an impressive rate.
They are making the magnets in Texas.
In short, China is on the clock. However, we won’t be self sufficient in the next 8 months.
That is why is taking control of China’s oil is a major move.

Why?
MAJOR investment was put in the Mountain Pass site including (and specifically targeting) refinement.
Once the plant in Texas (Dallas?) is at max capacity, China will no longer control the market as it relates to the U.S.
That is a potential geo-political game changer imho.

The only one. No
The only one on this site that suggested that the U.S. government invest in (or even takeover) the Mountain Pass mine site.
Yes.

Why?
Because Mexico is turning into a manufacturing powerhouse and it is preferable to deal with them in lieu of the Chinese
That doesn't mean that we don't also refine things here

You think one plant in Dallas is going to completely change the game?

When it comes to making rare earths magnets?
Possibly.
It depends upon their output.
If it is what they are aiming for…then yes.

We will see.
I don’t see the U.S. wanting to be dependent upon Mexico either.
