Jay Johnson not happy about not laying down bunt with perfect strike

I agree. Way too many times this year, players have pulled bat back with a freaking strike.

The first and third safety squeeze was Dardar. He proceeded to strike out.
Jake’s at bat was first and second with no outs, and he proceeded to strike out.

Yeah, you're right. We did it twice in one game

Dardar looked like he never attempted a bunt in his life and personally I wasn’t a fan of bunting your best player (Brown) in that situation, I know bide was right behind him and has been hot lately but you go with the guy who’s been consistent all year long.

It’s gotten to the point where it seems like guys are taking strikes early in the count when asked to bunt because they simply don’t want to bunt.
I hate to assume that, but there seems to be a lot of “me over we” energy with this team.

Ya think?

Why are we bunting first and second with our guy hitting. 388 with RSP?

Because he fails to get a hit 61% of the time and a sac fly or ground out will score a run.

Because sometimes bunts are more effective than swings in regards to scoring runs in a tight game.
Situational baseball. But this team has none.

To be fair, I’ve been watching LSU baseball for about two decades, and only remember seeing a handful of what I would call skillful bunters. My theory is the jump in movement on the pitches from high school to college, and I doubt these travel teams are playing much small ball.

I wouldn’t worry with remembering a lot of names of players on this team because a lot of them are going to be gone when the season is done!

It’s close and I see the opportunity for 2nd and 3rd with the go ahead run just a single away.
I just don’t like taking the bat out of the hands of my number one guy in that situation. Just a personal preference.
A single tie, the game and anything more you’ve gotta lead. Plus you’ve got three chances to get a guy home to tie the game with Brown, Arambide and Curiel up.

Because statistically with runners on 1st snd 2nd w no outs, it is the only time bunting increases your chances of scoring one run
And outside of the Clauss Experience, that one run may have well decided the game.
Back to the point of players’ abilities to SAC bunt, EVERY player in EVERY AB has one thing in mind, draft stock. They are all up there trying to show their value to the next level, and if that happens to result in wins, everyone is happy.
It’s much like trying to enjoy following the Astros when Bregman was in his contract year. We all know how well he can handle the bat, but his power was only to the pull side and that’s where the money is, so he constantly was pitched away and rarely hit it where it was pitched. I’m just officially too old to appreciate the changes in the game I’ve spent most of my life following.

I had a coach years ago. Had a saying if you can’t bunt, you can’t play the game. He would cut guys that couldn’t do it because there’s no way they’re seeing the ball well if they can’t do something simple like bunting.

Then teach them how to bunt. Minus a few guys we have sucked at bunting since Jay has been here. That is fine if you don’t want to play small play, but don’t ask kids to bunt in critical situations.

I remembered seeing some key guys bunt in the past. I looked up Dylan Crews bunt total. Although it wasn’t much he still had a total of 23 sacrifice bunts over his career here.

I would have guessed 3. That seems way off.

It shows in 2023 alone he had 6. But 2021 he did have 12 and 5 in 22 it’s baseball America stats. I was a little surprised also but I do remember him laying down some.
