I was today years old when I discovered that Gene Roddenberry pitched a Star Trek TV movie to Paramount in the early 70's that had James T. Kirk getting into a fist fight with... Jesus Christ.

Roddenberry was an atheist and thought humanity should "grow out of" religion, so in his pitch ("The God Thing") we find out that our gods throughout history have all been just aliens in disguise, and they were coming back to Earth rule us. The climactic ending had hand to hand combat between Kirk and Jesus on the bridge of the Enterprise. Watched a documentary where one of his writers said he looked at Roddenberry's treatment and went "Yeah, I don't want any part of this" and then Paramount killed the project when they got the story details. The script was novelized, but some of the concepts made it into Star Trek: TMP and Star Trek V.

Star Trek V had many flaws, but "What does God need with a starship?" was a great Kirk moment.

He hit on that in multiple episodes of the original series. Religion and human excellence being the result of aliens and not our natural growth.

Weider than a queer, cross-dressing Klingon?

Kirk could take him, but Jesus wouldn't stay down.

Interesting. But I bet he would have objected to the idea of Kirk fighting Mohammad.

That’s ridiculous. Jesus was a Jedi. They don’t exist in the Star Trek world.
