...going through some of our old storage cages prior to shipping stuff to our battalion and found a handful of USGI A1 handguards in excellent condition. Three left-hand and five right-hand (these are still in the original plastic with 3/86 dates) pieces. Would have been nice to have five complete sets but still happy to rescue them from the dumpster they were headed for. A lot of old basic rifle marksmanship training aides too, stuff for shadow box drills, sight alignment GTA's, and even the dummy claymore mines with spools of wire, M57 clackers, and M40 testers.

How is a right hand guard different from a left hand one?

A1's had triangular handguards, they have a LH & RH sides vs the A2's with handguards split for upper and lower and being interchangeable.

It’s insane how light A1’s are

The guys who did the WWSD rifle started the project because they picked up an A1 and it reminded them what the original intent was of the M16

Think a bare-bones M4 is about the same weight as an A1. I have a 20" with a heavy profile barrel and while it's a great shooter I would not want to lug it around day in and day out. I think I weighed it, my M1A, and M1 Garand and it was the heaviest and probably the worst balanced.

I’m going to build a WWSD-esque rifle in the future. Bowie had the KE arms polymer lowers for a stupid low price of $40 so I picked one up. I think the originals are less than 6 lbs unloaded.

But those handguards are badass. Hope no one cares about them falling off the truck

They would have gone into the trash if I didn't grab them, these cages are basically junky Army time capsules with a few gems. Found a rather clean General Electric Model 2012 wall clock too, doesn't work but if it turns out the movement is shot then I could put a Quartex sweep movement in it and it will work perfectly.

Hope these pictures work, not having luck with the usual image hosting site at the moment.

A 20" with full length gas tube and full length buffer is really great to shoot

I have a 5.56 chambered AR in every gas system length from rifle to pistol, definitely like my full-length and mid-length rifles the most.

I'll set aside a set of these handguards for when you do.

Not a problem, I have three complete sets and two extra right-hand parts I'm not sure what to do with as I'm never going to build three A1 clones... Rather they go to some good at least.

Hey Clames,

In a past post you said that you were outside of Memphis? Are you in Millington or somewhere else?

Sorry, I'm just being nosey.

More random militaria. My career has pretty much been training & ops NCO, always loved the old GTA's and training aids in preference to the newer digital/VR stuff. Even if it was a little hokey to have grown men and women crawl in the dirt to set up a piece of plastic, wire it up, then shout "I see the light!" as they squeezed on that M57 "Clacker". Most of the time it was all broken anyway, no clacking and certainly no lights to see... I've also collected a small library of old training manuals and -10's, I've always tried to dig up old references and techniques when training the current doctrine, I think there's value in the context of where we've been as well as showing a physical reference vs. trying to Google something in the field.
