ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY)- Louisiana’s deepest oil well has been completed in St. Martin Parish, reaching nearly 31,000 feet underground.
Located in Bayou Long, the well confirms the existence of deep gas formations that were previously inaccessible with older extraction methods.
The project was led by Gloria Moncrief and her team at Moncrief Oil, a Fort Worth, Texas-based company. Utilizing modern drilling technology, the team was able to access resources nearly six miles below the surface, validating long-held theories about the region’s geology.
Governor Jeff Landry and state officials recently celebrated the milestone in the heart of St. Martin Parish, where the governor grew up.
“A couple of weeks ago we went and celebrated the deepest well ever drilled in the state of Louisiana, it was done in St. Martin Parish, that’s kind of special to me because I grew up in St. Martin Parish,” Landry said.
The well’s unprecedented depth confirms gas reserves that had remained out of reach and further strengthens Louisiana’s role in the energy sector.
“We know that there’s deep gas formations in that area now, it’s been something that has been speculated for a long time and it will further help cement Louisiana as an energy dominant state,” Landry said.
Officials say advances in technology not only make ultra-deep drilling possible but also increase the demand for energy to support growing technological needs.
“Because of technology and the pace that technology is moving in, the amount of power demanded in order to meet that growth in technology, that oil and gas is going to play an absolutely pivotal role in that which places Louisiana in a very dominant state,” Landry said.
The well’s completion comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, which have impacted global oil markets. Landry highlighted the broader significance of Louisiana’s energy production.
“What we’re exporting is peace now, we think about the troubles that we’re having around the world, Louisiana gets an opportunity to be on the stage, on a global stage, to secure peace and energy and create an unbelievable foundation for the future,” he said.

Sorry if already posted here in the past week. I tried the search function, though maybe user error.
This is pretty dang cool, and Monrcrief Oil, from what I understand, was somewhat an influence upon the show “Landman”.

I’d like to know how long it took them to reach that deep

Spoke to a pipe worker who has worked on several NG pipelines that have been put through here about the possibility of O & G being drilled in this area. I said I know a land man, and he told me gas/oil where too deep to get to. Well, maybe not.

OP's mom was the old record holder.

Cant be much deeper than the one Freeport drilled around there in 2014, the Jeanerette Minerals #1, think it was TD'd at around 29k-30k'

Good, maybe the parish can figure out a better way to make revenue than traffic tickets.

I’m trying to find the well log data on Sonris to see when they reported spud, but not successful in the past five minutes. Wondering if it’s the OA A0406 #1 well with Highlander as the operator, with a permit date of November 2024 in the Bayou Long field.
But that one doesn’t appear to have any data in the well info beyond that permit date. Status is still 01, meaning just permitted.

I am fairly certain that there has been deeper TVD wells drilling in LA, granted those may have been offshore but I think there have been some land wells also.

I wonder if there’s a way on Sonris to sort all the wells ever drilled in Louisiana by TVD. Might take a while to load if there is such a way.

say what you want about Louisiana but we do have the best state oil and gas database, by a lot

New Mexico’s is very user friendly. I like the format better than Louisiana/Sonris.
My comment about such a search and sort taking long to load wasn’t a dig at the LA DNR system, though. It was more about the shear number of wells drilled in the history of the state, then having to sort by TVD, if that is even an option.

I thought you were a NW coast hippie? You got them truck nuts hanging?
Posted on 4/1/26 at 8:56 am to ragincajun03
Yeah. Can't find anything active at that dept in St. Martin and in the Bayou Long field.

We are about to drill a ~34,500' well in GoA. But ~31,000' on land is a great accomplishment!

I'm on the Regulatory side. Everyone hates me because I have to tell Operations when they can't do something, so I don't get to hang any truck nuts.

Might be SN 254918, permitted depth of 30,000. Search by field, sort by SN. Took me 3 minutes.
