And didn’t know it until after the crash.

Think about 2 kids in a 1st grade class who unbeknownst to anyone will go through many years of life and cross paths again on a fateful day.

The universe can be a wild place.

quote:

Tommy Propst always will be linked in the public mind with Dale Earnhardt, as the emergency rescue technician who disputed the NASCAR party line that the seat belt in the car of the late racing king was broken. But the Daytona 500 was not the first time their paths crossed.

EMT Tommy Propst said Earnhardt's seat belt was intact when he arrived.
In the days after the crash, Propst learned he had met Earnhardt before. It was in first grade, at Royal Oaks Elementary in Kannapolis, N.C., where they shared the same room and teacher. His sister, Cindy, found the connection by dusting off an old yearbook.

"I always knew we went to the same school but I didn't know we were in the same class," Propst said.

The frick?

I can recall pretty much everyone I went to elementary school with when I hear the name. I'd sure the hell remember them if they were to become the most famous racer on Earth.

I mean if it was just the one year it’s understandable. I remember most of the people from my school but couldn’t tell you everyone who was in my classroom each year unless I looked at the yearbook.

Same here. I could rattle off probably 90% of the names of the guys I played football with, but some random kid I only had in my class in first grade, nah.

1950s kannapolis wasn't that big, like 30k people. Couldn't imagine going through life pretending i didn't know the most famous person from my small town, who was the same damn age as me.

That is why you should always be nicer to people in school

EMT probably harbored a grudge

Sure he may not have explicitly remembered any of their interactions as 7 year olds, that's plausible. But with Dale being world famous and the most popular driver in America at the time, he never thought to check? Like if I knew Lebron James was the same age as me, from the same hometown as me, and by jove went to the same elementary school as me, you don't think I'd do some checking to see his picture in the yearbook somehwere?
