An old place I used to work had a customer (in the 90s) do ridiculous stuff like drop $3k in audio equipment into his 12 year old's room alone.
This guy also had us run oxygen free 3/0 (it was about as thick as a broomstick, but this was 30 years ago) to his living room sound system speakers. It was crazy expensive per foot. Rather than run it directly to the speakers (a run of maybe 7 feet to each front speaker, using a fancy version of a floor cable protector,) He had us run this cable up an 8 foot doorframe, across, and back down on each side, creating crazy extra expense. Southern Trace (Shreveport) was great at showing me how people can blow money.

A whole bunch of audiophiles:

I think it’s an irrational status thing. Kind of like how people will troll around a parking lot for ten minutes to get a “good” spot instead of just parking in the first open one they see.
From amplifier to driver, there is no point on spending any extra money on electronics. Even the $600 or whatever Sonos amp uses a $15 TI 3255 board as its amplifier.

We need to market audiophile bluetooth dongles.

Saw a thing many years ago that audiophile in a test couldn't tell the difference between the most expensive speaker cable out there and wire coat hangers

They conducted audio through a banana and mud and the audiophiles couldn't tell the difference either.
