New RHCP documentary on Netflix

This was pretty cool and worth checking out. I grew up during the Californication/By the way era of RHCP and loved them but I wasn’t really super aware of their earlier more punk/funk work. It was super interesting to see the early footage of them in the 80s and the insight into the LA scene in the 80s was very cool. Those guys have to be the coolest motherfrickers to ever live.
They talk about recording their first demo in the documentary and you can listen to it on the remastered version of the 1984 self-titled studio album. “Get Up and Jump” and “Out in LA” are SO fricking good even 40+ years later. These guys were so far ahead of their time back then it is just amazing.
My only critique would be I thought it was a missed opportunity to not use early RHCP music during the narration rather than using contemporary classic rock tunes. Anyway, recommended for all RHCP fans to check it out.

It was really well done. Watched it with the wife (no pics) who doesn't know too much about the RHCP and she loved it.

I like Californication, but I mostly listen to the stuff up to Blood Sugar Sex Magic. They were raw and outstanding.

I need to watch this.
Blood Sugar Sex Magic came out when I was an angsty teenager, and it hit me right in the sweet spot.

Shooting heroin and lisping/rapping is not cool in any fashion. I love this band, but they were out of control and are lucky to have survived the 90's.

Mother's Milk came out when I was huge into skateboarding and that whole culture in junior high, then BSSM was just that great mix of funk, hip hop, and rock. Really liked them back in those days.
And yeah, I threw this on last night while waiting on my wife to finish up what she was doing so we could watch a different show.. and it definitely hooked me in within first 10 minutes. I'll be finishing it.

Yea, Californication was a bit too clean sounding. Good album, but not as raw as BSSM.

Californication is a great album. Great lyrics and playing.
But Mother’s Milk and BSSM just force you to get up and move. They are so infectiously funky but rockin at the same time.
Knock Me Down
Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky
Taste The Pain
Suck My Kiss
The Righteous and The Wicked
Apache Rose Peacock
That’s me. I love that shite.

Yea, they're really good.
Should always be played loud.

I played the shite out of their greatest hits album in hs in the early 2000s and did not know that Frusciante wasn’t their original guitarist until this doc
We had their “Live at Slane Castle” dvd on repeat at parties back then
Awesome doc. How the frick did flea become a competent bass player in 2 weeks tho? Lol

Interestingly, Phil Lesh was also reputed to have learned the bass in a single day when approached by Jerry to play in a band. He, like Flea, had a background as a trumpet player and some classical training. I think bass is "easy" for people who have some understanding of rhythm and scales. Doesn't mean it's an easy instrument to become really proficient with, but the barrier to entry isn't the same as some other instruments.
Anyway, finished the doc last night. It was really enjoyable. I guess I didn't realize it was basically just going to focus on the Hillel area. Maybe I missed it or maybe it was too on the nose, but I thought it was weird they never talked about Knock Me Down, since it's basically a response to the whole death.
