Not a lot of details out yet, but the rumor is that his house was being robbed and somehow he was ran over 2-3 times. He died during surgery.

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - Former Rapides Parish Sheriff Williams Earl Hilton has passed away following a hit-and-run that happened in the Hineston area on March 23, according to current Rapides Parish Sheriff Mark Wood.
According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a hit-and-run call around 1 p.m. Hilton was located with severe injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Shortly after Hilton was airlifted, RPSO said the suspect’s vehicle was later found speeding eastbound on LA 28 at Leavines Road. Authorities attempted to make a traffic stop, but RPSO said the suspect refused, and a chase ensued, hitting speeds well over 100 mph.
Authorities deployed spike strips and stopped the suspect at LA 28 and Cloverleaf Boulevard, where they were arrested without further issue.
The suspect’s name has not been released yet.
Hilton served as sheriff for 16 years, first sworn in in 1992. He served four terms, running unopposed. He retired in 2008 and then came back and ran again in 2012 and 2015. Sheriff Wood took over in 2020.

I heard the same story from someone who would know. I grew up about 5 miles from his house and went to high school with his kids.
Edited to say I was told it was a woman.

I’ve seen a name floated on Facebook, but nothing official. If it is true it was an older white woman.

I hope they go for the death penalty.

Less likely with a female suspect

Less likely, but she ran him over multiple times before fleeing and he's former LEO. I would hope that they still go for it.

Shicola was the first to release the name several hours ago.

That’ll all depend on the “why”.
For death sentence eligibility in LA, it would need to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he was targeted because of his former position. That sort of thing is easy to know but much harder to prove to a jury.

There is much more to this story

But she did not run over the deputy.

I’ll be interested in why she chose his house. Did she know it was his or was it random? The house is off the road but not remote.

LoL. Good gallows humor.
What's the over/under that she was drunk?

Seems very odd considering she lives in Pollock which is roughly 45 miles from Hineston where it occurred. Like someone said above.

This is pretty terrible. He came to my grandfathers funeral a few years back. He was a very nice friendly guy. Definitely didn't deserve this.

Seems a high likelihood to be a domestic issue? Ex, mistress, family member, etc

There's at least one, and possibly two, other predicates for First Degree Murder that are supported by the facts.
First, he was over 65. That meets section 5 of La. R.S. 14:30, which reads:
quote:
(5) When the offender has the specific intent to kill or to inflict great bodily harm upon a victim who is under the age of twelve or sixty-five years of age or older.
Second, there are rumors of this being a robbery or burglary. If so, it could be charged under section 1, which reads:
quote:
(1) When the offender has specific intent to kill or to inflict great bodily harm and is engaged in the perpetration or attempted perpetration of... aggravated burglary, armed robbery..., first degree robbery, second degree robbery, simple robbery...

Robbery? By a single elder female?
Running over someone multiple times sounds personal (if that’s what actually happened).

I know someone that was at the hospital when they brought him in. There was mention there of a man that was with the woman that RUNNOFT.
