Amtrak is superior to flying — change my mind. I show up 10 minutes early like a free citizen, not a suspect, keep my shoes on, keep my dignity, and nobody confiscates my shampoo like it’s a national security threat.

Meanwhile at the airport I’m in a mile-long TSA line practicing interpretive dance in a body scanner just to earn the privilege of sitting in a seat designed by a chiropractor’s worst enemy.

On a train I get legroom, a view, and the radical freedom to exist with a full-size water bottle — truly the American dream!

Meh, depends on which route you’re taking about.

It certainly is in certain situations. I would say at about 300-400 miles, flying is too much faster to make train travel logical.

I took the train from Boston to New York. It was cheap, clean and a great ride. And when you take into account the time at the airport, and the commute to and from both airports, the total travel time is about the same for train and plane. That is not the case on a lot of destinations.

Have you ever heard of tsa precheck? You should look into it.

Also, Amtrak only departs from and reaches certain destinations.

Did Amtrak from SLC to NOLA and back once. It wasn't bad.

I do recommend a bedroom and not the roomette.

Train travel is much more civilized, but unfortunately generally limited to the eastern corridor between Boston and Washington DC. The US is too large and spread out to make it practical enough to replace most air travel. When I'm in Europe the train is almost always preferable to flying.

Modern domestic air travel is one of the more miserable experiences a human can have.

If you’re retired…sure!
Besides the easy coast network, it’s expensive & slow.
When my parents were living in Albuquerque, I looked at tickets for the Fam to board in East Texas to ABQ. It would take a day and a half & it was more expensive than airline ticket

I'm going to Austin in a few weeks. From Fort Lauderdale to Austin, it's about a 2.5 hour flight - add in two hours before, it takes about 4.5-5 hours to travel to Austin.

Just looked up public transportation and it would take 36 hours to not fly.

I'll stick to flying.
