Watching this Florida game... I don't think I've ever seen this but would foul in this situation? Up 2 less than ten seconds. Worst case they make two you get a last shot and you're the better team you would welcome overtime. Other option you let it all ride on a 3 by the other team that of course they just hit.

The thought crossed my mind, but I don’t know if you just give them 2 points like that.

1. They have to make the free throws

2. You still get a shot at winning it

3. It only applies if you are clearly a better team and would be happy the longer the game went.

The more i think about it the more obvious it is, I'm not letting my season hinge on a single shot that's out of my control. Bet Florida wishes they had done it right now.

Iowa had 5 shooters on the floor and outplayed them for vast majority of the game.

Dumb.

The play was to sag back. Why they pressed is a mystery. NBA talent got the ball in full stride and their dumbass press set up a decision to stop the ball or give up a corner 3

And What if they get the rebound on a missed FT?

If a coach ever uses that “strategy”, he should be fired in the locker room after the game.

We deserved to lose regardless. Incredible game plan by Iowa.

The odds of them making the first free throw, missing the second, getting the rebound and scoring are significantly, very significantly lower than making a 3 point shot. This actually isn't that hard.

Not true. We all know refs are crappy in college sports.

What happens if your fouler doesn’t do it fast enough and they get ball down court and then the team thinking standing orders are to foul, do it and they get a continuation shot off and make it.

You just never know. Florida had no need to guard the paint as only a 3 could beat them. But give credit ti Iowa on designing a play and credit to shooter making it.

Lol. You really are retarded. Screen name checks out.

I have been watching basketball for >35 years and I’ve never seen a wizard coach foul and give the opponent 2 shots when up 2. Because it is a retarded strategy.

That's not the point. It is a scenario you completely dismissed by saying "worst case scenario you have the ball to win it or go to OT"

Also, the foul timing execution could be fricked and now they're shooting three FTs

The one thing you don't do is let them shoot a layup.

There are a lot of other possibilities not yet mentioned.

Let’s say you foul with 8 seconds left, opponent makes 1 of 2 free throws, and then you turn the ball over on the in bounds.

And if you don’t foul, let’s say their odds of hitting the 3 are 30%. You can also force a turnover or block the shot and they never even get the shot off.

Todd Golden said that was exactly what Florida was trying to do.

I guess you need players that can intentionally foul for it to work.

He’s full of it. Golden had his defense playing in front of the Hawkeyes going for a steal. If he was fouling they would’ve playing behind them, let them catch the ball then foul.

Coaches also punted on almost every fourth down for nearly a century before everyone realized how stupid that was. I guarantee you if an analytics nerd ran the numbers what I'm saying would come out as the better strategy in that specific scenario. Again this only applies if a team is clearly the better overall team whose odds would improve the longer the game goes.
