What if…..Tim Floyd would have taken the LSU job….

There was some discussion about Tim Floyd coming to LSU after the UNO ™ or maybe Iowa State job back in the 90’s. What if that would’ve happened? Would LSU basketball have had a dynasty?

Eh, dynasty, no but it would’ve been a better version of the Brady era most likely.

He was only there for 4 years, made the tourney 3 times. He could recruit, Tony Harris, Ervin Johnson, Melvin Simon, Derrick Willoughby, Mike McDonald, Fizer, Tinsley, Nick Young, OJ Mayo, Taj Gibson, Demar Derozan, Nikola Vucevic. Made the tourney 6 of 8 years between ISU and USC. Made it a few times at UNO as well.

Yeah, Floyd had to work real hard to recruit Earvin Johnson. Johnson was stocking shelves at a supermarket and someone talked him into trying out for basketball. He walked into Floyd's office and said he wanted to walk on. That was the extent of Floyd's recruiting him

I heard the story that Dale Brown is the one who recommended Johnson to Floyd at UNO. L SU didn’t have room for him so Dale called Floyd and told him about this big 7 footer working at a supermarket.

Floyd offered him a scholarship at the tryout. Johnson wasn’t recruited because he dropped out of HS Fr. or So. year and grew 6-8 inch’s after HS. The Dale Brown thing maybe true but Johnson says it was a friend or former teammate who suggested it.

I miss that 90’s era of BBall. Perry Clark had Tulane going, UNO was a good team, and LaTech was having some solid years. LSU was deteriorating at the same time though coming off the loss of Shaq.

Tim’s next job after ISU was going to be the NBA (which it was). He may have looked at LSU while leaving UNO but I never heard of LSU being in the running and likely would have known back then.
My source was the guy who heated a couple of ponds and imported a Florida strain of bass to get Floyd to Ames. Yes that happened after Tim turned it down because “he likes bass fishing over ice fishing”. The dude literally had heated ponds (like a few acres each) to support a warmer water, faster growing large mouth subspecies.
