It's not really, but it's incredible. I'd pretty much just say anything to convince someone to go see it though.

I know there is a Project Hail Mary thread already but this is simply just to encourage anyone who was debating whether or not to go see it, to tell them to go see it. You won't regret it. And preferably see it on the biggest and loudest screen possible.

It's not The Godfather, but it's a masterpiece as far as popcorn flicks go.

Edit:

If you go because of this thread and spend $100 on movie tickets and food/drinks with your family and don't like it, I will personally send you $1 Venmo to help out. I am that confident you will like it. A can't lose situation.

Is this the spoiler thread?

I saw it last night and lived it.

When it was announced, I wasn't sure about the gosling casting, it he nailed it.

The only thing I didn't love is how they tried to humanize Stratt. She is such a cold/objective principled villain in the book. Making her human hurt her character imo

Well alright!

I loved the book and I’m excited to go. First non kids movie I will have seen in theaters in years.

They did soften her a lot in the movie, but I don't think she should be characterized as a cold villain. She's just extremely pragmatic and determined to make the tough decisions. She also admits to having a soft spot for Grace.

I use villain as a synonym for antagonist.

Yes, she was not evil, but her pragmatic approach to sending grace in the hail Mary against his will is what makes her the "principled villain"

The karaoke scene was fun, but unnecessary and against type for her character.

I suspect there is a Stratt/Grace love side plot sitting on the cutting room floor.

I loved the book, really want to see this in theaters. I haven't been in years and this thing is 3 hours long, I have reservations.

I'll put it in the OP that spoilers are OK. The other thread still isn't doing spoilers so I wouldn't mind talking about some details.

I've always liked him so I was excited when they casted him. I had pretty high expectations on this one and they more than met it.

This was one of the few things that my memory was hazy on from the book. I couldn't remember her character details all that much but just remember her being kind of cold. They did humanize her but obviously when it came down to the tough decisions she was very cold.

I think they did a good job of condensing the science aspect of it. The book would get a little tedious with the math and I think they did a good job of explaining things simple enough.

Rocky was absolutely perfect. Actually better than what I tried to imagine in my head while reading. I always just pictured a regular ol spider in my mind Rocky had me in all the feels that he did in the nook and probably more. Seeing him grab grace and almost kill himself was so so so good. And the scar/burn mark on Grace's arm they showed later was a nice touch.

Even that scene, it seems like she only did it (and just enough of it) to increase moral and productivity. I saw more pragmatism.

I understand your pt though.

It's on the longer side for sure. But I don't feel like it really dragged anywhere outside of the dang trailers. We had over 30 minutes of trailers. I normally like seeing the trailers but it got to I was like good lord can we get on with the movie already.

You Project Hail Mary folks are almost cultish.

Gotta say this is an awful way to go about it because of how obsessed people on this board are with the concept of “overhyped”

You still mad that it's not comparable to your dumb Adam Sandler space movie comparison?

But on your note, I am in the small minority that thought the book was good, but didn't blow my mind. Certainly not cultish. I actually enjoyed the movie more and appreciate it staying close to the source.

No disrespect to OP but I heard The Martian was a masterpiece as well when in reality it was just an okay one and done flick. I'm a little leary of the hype this one's getting because it takes me back to 2015 when the Martian came out and that one was a bit of a let down.

I think that’s mostly a fake out for the question “who would you die for”

They make it seem like there might be some romantic tension there.

I went on Monday and expected this, being at an AMC.

Apparently there were none for the prescreening, because I walked in 5 minutes late and he was already discovering the crewmates.

I can’t even say I’ve seen the whole movie yet.

I liked The Martian but it had to make changes that cut out a lot of the tension for certain parts of Mark’s journey across Mars. Plus they ruined the space pirate joke and did that whole “iron man” scene which was only a joke in the book.

Not sure if you read PHM, but it is more faithful to the book than The Martian. More faithful than the vast majority of book adaptations.
