Brand new 2026 GMC 1500 4x4, comes with standard 3/36,000 and 5/60,000
Being offered extended warranty - 7 years/unlimited miles - $2,500

I plan on keeping past the 7 year mark, tend to baby my vehicles mechanically. No jackrabbit starts, excessive speed, heavy braking, etc. Light offroad use but not a ton. No towing, at least in the foreseeable future. Primarily highway or rural miles.

Advice?

ETA: engine is 6.2 gasoline

Offer them half. It’s a negotiation.

Yes, without a doubt.. Especially with that new 10speed transmission that GM and Ford put in their trucks.

I get the extended warranty every time I purchase a vehicle, pays for itself.

With all of the technology and chips and screens etc.

I would absolutely get the warranty.

Advice?

2026 GMC Sierra trucks equipped with the 6.2L V8 (L87) engine are experiencing serious, low-mileage engine failures, with reports of catastrophic failures, seized engines, and severe knocking within the first few thousand miles. These issues are linked to defective connecting rods and crankshafts.

Folks here will say no. I did, and it has paid for itself more than once.

Yeah avoid the 6.2... I just bought a 2026 Silverado 5.3 V8 because I knew the issues they were having and even the salesman were saying not to buy the 6.2 right now.

Normally no, but with the 6.2 and 5.3 catastrophic engine failures, yes. But not at their price.

I just bought a 26 trail boss with a 6.2 L. They’ve taken care of most of the problems somewhat. The models from 2019 through 23 with the main ones with problems. Not to mention the motor in my truck is an absolute animal. And yes, I got the full extended warranty.

Always. Typically transferrable if done within 30 days of sale, or you can get refund of unused portion if totaled. Price is initially very inflated so negotiate. Tell them you won't purchase vehicle unless deal on extended warranty. I was able to get extended warranty for a couple hundred over cost on last few vehicles.

I think it's a crapshoot at this point. Modern cars are generally more reliable, but harder and more expensive to repair.

I have purchased 12 cars for me and the family over time and never considered one until the car in 2023. Ultimately didn't get it because I have never been in a position to have used one. Figure I am far enough ahead I will need to eat a big repair bill or two before I see the value.

I am also at a point where I can eat them, if you can't and are able to spread the cost out over a loan term that may be the smart risk decision.

I just bought a '23 Tahoe w/ the 5.3. Has 45,000 on it. I went through the Credit Union until 120,000 miles for $2,300. The dealership couldn't touch that.

With all the comments about the 6.2, I automatically have 5 years coverage correct? So if the motor fails early it's already covered w/ standard warranty.

So basically this warranty is only a factor for the gap between year 5 and 7, or the excess over 60k, correct?

Paying cash, so averaging cost of warranty through finance term not a factor

Avoid it. They don’t know how to fix half the issues.
