Lots of people here spend significant time arguing the merits or pitfalls of distant events like the violence in Iran. We’re just so far removed from these events that we’re able to discuss them as observers rather than participants.

Same with all the mental and emotional investment in the SAVE Act. The people in charge have too much invested in the status quo. They are not going to risk their positions to make message board partisans feel reassured.

I run a program that helps felons on probation/parole get their GEDs. Today I found out one of my most consistent and promising students was arrested over the weekend. It’s just devastating. It’s very easy and comfortable for people who aren’t around “a certain demographic” to cast judgment from places of privilege but y’all just don’t know what some people are up against. And as much as this board loves to deny that systemic issues exist, the obstacles are systemic and they are not addressed by message board lectures about personal responsibility.

My capacity for disappointment has been exceeded this week. When I told his case manager about the arrest, she started popping off about Trump and “how can we expect people in the streets to follow rules when the president doesn’t have to?” I just looked at her and said “Trump doesn’t have to face the consequences of his actions. My student does. I don’t care about Trump. I care about people with skin in the game.”

Trump is going to be fine. Yet he’s the one with legions of strangers who devote significant portions of their days to defending him online. Meanwhile, I am preemptively frustrated by the red tape I will have to clear just to go visit my student in jail. It’s depressing.

BTW none of my student's charges or convictions are violent and he's still stuck in pre-trial detention because cash bail doesn't always make sense.

And if we're subjected to threads about every obscure tweet MAGA finds, y'all can handle this post.

No one is subjecting you to shite, sugarplum.

If only your student cared as much about his "skin in the game" as you do, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Her student was evidently inspired by The Don's alleged lawlessness and figured that he should do hood rat shite in solidarity... or something.

As much as liberals insist that systemic issues exist, they never provide a single example. I am a living example of someone who didn't have money and didn't have a job, but the thought of committing a crime never crossed my mind.

Lack of reliable public transportation is a systemic issue impacting people without private vehicles.

This person didn’t commit a crime because they didn’t have money and didn’t have a job. But congratulations for not being arrested. I can guarantee you have broken a law before.

I prefer the term whoopass in Iran so I didn’t read the rest of your post.
