A List of What You Currently Need a Birth Certificate For

A certified birth certificate (not the hospital keepsake) is still one of the core documents you’re asked for throughout life. Here are the most common situations where you’ll need it today, in almost every state:
- Getting a first U.S. passport
- Getting your first driver’s license or state ID (and sometimes after a long lapse)
- Replacing or first-time getting a Social Security card when other proof is limited
- Enrolling a child in school (and sometimes college) to prove age and identity
- Applying for a marriage license
- Joining the military
- Applying for many government benefits when you need to prove age or citizenship
- Proving eligibility to work when you don’t have a passport and must use multiple documents
- Handling custody, guardianship, adoption, or step-parent adoption
- Proving a child’s identity and parentage in inheritance or estate matters
- Court processes like legal name changes or some family-law and immigration cases
- Ordering or replacing your own or a family member’s vital records
- Signing kids up for programs that strictly verify age (certain leagues or camps)
- Some travel situations for minors when proving the child-parent relationship
Bottom line: Providing a birth certificate has been a normal part of everyday life for years—especially for things like getting a first driver’s license or passport. So when some people suddenly act like showing a birth certificate to verify citizenship for voting is extreme or “new,” it’s worth asking why. The standard is already there for many other basic parts of life—why should confirming that a voter is a citizen be treated differently? And when states like Minnesota move away from requiring proof of citizenship for a driver’s license, it only raises more questions about why some leaders are so determined not to know who is actually a citizen when it comes to voting.

To me, the solution to that is to grease the skids for them getting one - not acting like it's impossible because various State archives are so incompetent in serving their constituents.

That's pretty true. I understand the difficulties women face when they change their married names, like dealing with issues from various institutions. To me, the solution is to make the process easier for them—rather than acting like it's impossible because different state archives are so inefficient in serving their constituents.
I've known many women over the years who got married, updated their last name on all their documents, and never encountered any complaints or claims that it was impossible. Recently, I had an employee who faced an issue with the IT department, which was unwilling to change her last name in the company system. They claimed it would require too much effort, but that wouldn't prevent her from voting or handling any legal matters. I told them to get it done, and they did. They were the most difficult IT department I have ever worked with.

All for birth certificate to get a driver's license, but don't make me bring it with me to vote! Counterpoint, many reasons why being a citizen should not be a requirement to drive a car...DL should carry a Non citizen label on it.

Getting a real ID drivers license. How come this wasn’t “too difficult”. Or racist?

You used to only need your birth certificate to go to Mexico and Canada.

They have no intention of passing this legislation. Thune said so himself this afternoon on Fox News.
Republican voter turnout will be pathetic in November and deservedly so.
