Fury prop slung a blade

Had read about Fury props slinging blades a few weeks back. Both the 3 and 4 blade versions.

This one decided to do it after an 18 mile run. For those wondering.. hit nothing while running. All other blades and skeg were clean as a whistle.

Made for a fun, vibration-filled limp back to the ramp at 26-28 mph.

And of course the warranty went out last year on the prop…. BOHICA. :(

Ouch. I've heard about those high performance props doing that. Almost pulled the trigger on a Fury. Glad I didn't .

Common issue with the Fury if you run them too high on your Jack plate.

Get a Bravo 1 FS. 1.5 to 2" more pitch.

Blades too thin? Stress crack? Have you hit anything in the recent past?

Powertech has never failed for me

Fury props do this more than any other prop it seems. No prior damage needed.

Factory settings never touched. Manual jackplate

Will probably be replacing it with a Bravo 1 XS, 26- pitch. Seems to be a better prop, not as hard/brittle

And being a metallurgist I’ll be able to check if it was indeed a bad casting from the factory. ;)

And Bass Cat ships them lower than what most people think is ideal. Both of mine were over 4" PTP.

Sweet, would be interested in hearing what you determine the root cause to be.

Naw
Came with 24” Fury 3 from factory. Rep at Classic took me for a drive and got her to 79.8 mph with both of us ( half fuel, med tackle and both of us 225 lbs plus) so I know the set up was right and stuck with the Fury. Know I’ll lose a couple mph with the Bravo but sounds like it is superior in every other way… especially keeping all it’s “ears” :)-

When they designed the Fury they yhinned the blade profile to the point they had to go to a different metal/alloy. Harder steel usually can be more brittle in general, so any porosity or stress risers inherent in the casting make for a bad condition. Couple that with the torque the new Merc four strokes make and it’s a matter of “when”, not “if” things go to chit.

FTR…. 178 hrs on engine/prop

I mean, a 4 stroke engine. XS vs FS on the Bravo.

To a degree I’m guessing

I never overtrim and don’t use a hydraulic jackplate so surfacing the prop is not a potential cause on mine. Don’t hammer down all the time, just on occassion. Never hit anything with the prop worth mentioning other than idling through the occassional standing timber at idle speed. And the tiniest nick or imperfection I always touched up before next trip, not that there was ever anything that caused a dent , etc.

Just a by- product of having a Fury performance prop I guess…

Gotcha

250 pro 4-stroke.
When I researched them I found the FS , while designed for four strokes, was being used more on heavy hulls like multi species boats etc.
The XS has a shorter hub and while designed more for high performance two-strokes also works best on faster hulls running the pro xs four-strokes. Just losses a couple of mph on top vs the Fury 3, but better everywhere else… or so I hear

I really don't think that's true. I think the only difference is vent holes.

What does a Fury prop do for you? Get an extra 3 mph top end?
