basically gave up a late 1st and a 4th round pick.

the 3rd and 4th are nearly pick swaps to an extent.

that seems like a lot of a guy who had 64 receptions for 910 yards and 6 touchdowns last year

Hold on tight Denver fans. Your coach is in his ‘win now’ mode.

Good luck

This feels like a typical Payton-era Saints offseason move..

"We're one piece away... all i need is one good-ish receiver to put us over the top"

Hello Jairus Byrd

In fairness, Byrd was actually a pretty good player once he got healthy, but not worth what he signed for.

The other issue was Payton switching the scheme from what worked the year before and doing to Byrd what he did to Vaccaro in trying to force him to play single high deep safety when that isn't what either of those players were good at. Payton constantly tried to force square pegs into round holes, especially on defense, and often did so because he wanted to go get the "best player" and make the player fit what he thought was best instead of letting that player do what he does best.

people trash the Byrd signing but he had the most interceptions in the league the year before.

Jason David and Brandon Browner on the other hand...

David and Browner were both zone corners asked to come and play mostly man. xD

Payton sure was a bright guy at times...

Honestly I think it was Loomis finally getting tired of Payton's shite being the reason Payton "retired" before getting fired. Constantly always fully max the cap yearly and trade up nearly every draft.

Edit:
On Byrd, I think the biggest issue is signing someone to that contract knowing he needed back surgery, on top of Payton not caring what he actually did best.

Looking back you can see which of these moves we made were total Payton moves, especially with how much it changed under Allen and now especially Moore.

Overpaid. Waddle isn't that good. If I'm giving up a first and more, plus paying a large contract, it better be for an AJ Brown caliber player.

Yeah good point. It looks worse than it is on a team on the cusp. Waddle’s entire thing his entire career has been health. When he’s healthy he’s great and also totally different from the rest of their receivers.

This should be discussed in length along side the "Payton bailed on us" rhetoric. I'm feeling you on this one bone.

Don't forget C.J. Spiller.

But we can't question Payton. He's a genius. Just ask him.
