The 49ers hate Brandon Aiyuk so much, they aren't going to release him. Yet

Petty? Yes. Understandable, though? Yes.
Do the 49ers care it's petty? Absolutely not. Should they? No.

The Niners must be fully aware of reports how the Washington Commanders are itching to sign Aiyuk and pair him with his good collegiate friend, quarterback Jayden Daniels. And the sooner San Francisco gives Aiyuk the boot, the sooner Commanders general manager Adam Peters makes the call.
The 49ers, who clearly felt burned by Aiyuk, have no reason to speed up that process and aid both Aiyuk and Washington getting acclimated with each other. Heck, that seemed to be Aiyuk's play all along, dating back to 2024 when he was negotiating with the Niners for that lucrative (and combative) contract extension.
In light of how toxic the relationship got, combined with that whole AWOL thing, San Francisco doesn't want to feel like it's "rewarding" Aiyuk by letting him go to sign with his team of choice.
His contract has a roster bonus that comes due on September 1st, until then the 49ers are just going to keep him around. Unless someone gives a 7th round pick for him.
They do not like him

Lynch had some pretty blunt comments a month or two ago that had me wondering WTF happened.

Petty implies any grudge they hold is stupid. He completely quit on the team and went AWOL after signing a massive contract that SF is on the hook for (which is a joke that I hope gets fixed in the next CBA). Add the ACL tear almost 18 months ago and showing no real interest in getting back and it’s near impossible to even trade him for scraps
He set them back big time. He can deal with a sliver of inconvenience

Yeah it turns out he’s a nut job
A few days ago he was on a livestream in his car just letting an ice cream cone melt in his hand for 9 minutes straight

Even his private WR Coach TJ Houshmandzadeh publicly said any team thinking about signing him should do so cautiously to minimize their risk

Yeah, that sounds about right. The 49ers have no guarantees left on his contract and can hold him until they have to pay or deal with him UNLESS they get something.
It's Washington's fault that they made it clear that they value him. They should have STFU until he was released.

Aiyuk has made his bed and is laying in it but the 9ers need to just cut bait and move on. Holding onto his rights is pretty silly at this point

If they don’t cut him there’s a greater than 0% chance they get a pick for him
This is a pretty easy correct decision
Plus they play the Commanders this year. If he goes there, it’s in SF’s direct interest to impede the ability of their passing game to come together, particularly if they end up playing early. If WAS wants to do something about that, they can cough something up in return
The Commanders were idiots for telegraphing how badly they wanted him. Their GM doesn’t deserve to be let off the hook for it

What's the cliffs on the timeline of what this dude did?

There’s a zero percent chance they get something for him in either way. No one is trading an asset for that guy given the drama, injury, and length he’s been away from football, not to mention his contract you’d inherit within a trade

But just in case, nothing to be gained by cutting him

Not sure if it counts against the cap, but Aiyuk won’t be receiving another dime from SF from my understanding.

They voided his guarantees which clears the way for a string free release, but his cap number are still in effect if he’s active and on the roster this year for the 49ers. He would also still get a base salary and any per game / incentives he earns if he’s a 49er (or if another team trades for that contract without renegotiation)

In think everyone in the planet knows he won’t be a 9er.
