Basketball Recruiting Strategy

Kashie Natt had another good game for Sam Houston last night -- 17 points, 16 rebounds, 2 steals. He was the CUSA DPOY.
To me, Natt is emblematic of the type of player that could generally make up an in-state core of LSU basketball.
Washington (Maryland) - 9.8 PPG, 9.2 RPG
Tugler (Houston) - 8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, Big 12 All-Defense
Pierre Jr. (SMU) - 17.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG, All-ACC Honorable Mention
Coleman (Oklahoma State) - 9.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG
That's a lot of rebounding and defense with those 5 guys, and those are the types of athletic, high-energy Louisiana guys that could generally set the tone for the basketball program.
You'd want more scoring and a distributor at point to go with those guys, and there are a lot of good nearby areas for filling out the roster.

Sounds great. But you are just treating the symptoms...not the cause of the lack of success. You could get everyone of those guys in and it wouldn't make a huge difference as long as McMahon was the HC.

This exactly because he doesn't have a system or plan of how to utilize his players. He clearly has no idea how to compete and strategize against the other coaches in our conference. We seemingly just hand out money to players that had good seasons at other schools and hope they come together to form a good team.

I was thinking of this as an in-state recruiting strategy with a new coach. McMahon obviously botched this -- zero Louisiana guys on the roster in 2025-26.

Small thing I noticed. LSU Football and Women's basketball makes a post on their official twitter accounts congratulating every state championship team. Boys basketball state championship are this weekend and LSU Men's basketball twitter has been dead since the SEC tourney loss. Not that that's gonna make recruits pour in but that's an extremely low effort outreach that obviously the athletic department is aware of but men's basketball doesn't even attempt.

These are my favorite of takes.

LSU basketball recruiting means nothing with a lame duck coach. None of these guys will be around more than a year.

Good call. That's another good rebounding and defense guy, and a high-percentage shooter.

Graves and Chris Cenac Jr. (9.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG) may have the most NBA potential of Louisiana natives in CBB currently.
Cenac played his senior year with Link Academy (Missouri), but he's from New Orleans.

His older brother played for LSU for 4 year, 3 of those under Wade.

I know that’s why I’m hopeful he’ll come

Graves would be a very nice piece out of the portal
3 years to play still and 12/7 coming off the bench this year is really promising with >40% from 3 and even had 2 assists and 2 steals a game while only turning it over less than once....good numbers for a big man
Bare minimum he would probably not be an expensive add from the portal wanting to potentially come home and worst case he's probably a key bench piece.
