Apparently he can do this. Mike Lee says he can walk into the Senate any time he wants and take Thune's place as leader of the Senate.

I would love to see him walk in and invoke the filibuster. Put them ALL on the record. Even the GOP turncoats.

VP can preside over the Senate, maintain order, and cast a vote when there’s a tie.

He cannot set the legislative process or agenda though

VP is already the presiding chair. Thune isn't.

Edit: And I'm guessing Thune and the people who are against the talking filibuster are a whole helluva lot more experienced with the pros/cons of it than anyone or anything in the White House. Pandora's boxes don't get closed very easily in politics.

Correct. I should have looked this up before starting this thread. He doesn't have the authority to set the agenda. Still yet, I wonder if he will preside over the proceedings when the bill comes to the floor.

Trump also has the authority to cock walk in there and take over debate sessions in the Senate.

Do both

Nah. It would be nice if he could, but that position is the VPs and the VPs alone.

I can't remember the exact rule, but "Former Presidents of the United States shall be entitled to address the Senate upon appropriate notice to the Presiding Officer who shall thereupon make the necessary arrangements."

It's not that. Did you listen to the video? Beck makes it sound as if he has that authority. Beck is wrong.

This would give him the ability to make an address to the Senate, not take over their debate session. But he can't do that as a current sitting POTUS. Only former POTUSes.

What he could do though is convene a special session of Congress and address them all that way.

Timing is both irrelevant and everything.

This is false. He's a former president. They'd at least have to adjudicate the rule.

It is not false. Also, as I said, he has stronger means of addressing the Senate. What he can do is convene a special session of Congress and address all of them at once.

No sitting president has ever tried to invoke Senate Rule XIX to address the Senate. He wouldn't need to. He has better ways of addressing them than trying to claim he is somehow the sitting and former President.
