From the Telegraph (Paywall)

quote:

The deployment of HMS Dragon to Cyprus has been delayed because the naval base where it is being repaired only operates from nine to five, a union has claimed.

The warship is being sent to protect a British base on the island following its attack by Iranian drones last weekend, but its departure has been held up to allow staff to finish welding and other maintenance.

The Prospect union said the delays were exacerbated by shorter working hours introduced by the Ministry of Defence and private operator Serco for “cost-cutting” purposes.

It claimed that the Portsmouth base no longer works round the clock and usually operates from 9am to 5pm on weekdays.

Mike Clancy, the general secretary of Prospect, said: “Our members are stepping up to help, but such a vital service shouldn’t be dependent on goodwill from staff. Out-of-hours support should be locked into the contract.

Sir Keir Starmer has been criticised over deciding to deploy a Type 45 destroyer to protect the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus on Tuesday more than 72 hours after the conflict in the Middle East began.

On Wednesday, The Telegraph revealed that HMS Dragon would not arrive in the eastern Mediterranean for another fortnight, including a week of maintenance in a dry dock.

Al Carns, a defence minister, admitted the ship would not leave until engineers had finished “a variety of different bits of maintenance”.

As a result, it will arrive in Cyprus after warships from France and Spain.

From another Telegraph story:

quote:

It was an acute embarrassment for Britain. UK defence officials had been discussing sending a warship but faced a problem – five of the Royal Navy’s Type 45 air-defence destroyers were out of service for repairs, while the only one on active duty, HMS Duncan, was also scheduled for routine maintenance.

Bombarded by Cypriot fury in private and calls to act from the opposition in public, Sir Keir eventually announced in his own video message at 4.09pm that Britain would rush HMS Dragon out of repairs and send it to the region.

Meanwhile, over at the White House, Mr Trump was not finished taunting the Prime Minister.

First, in a newspaper interview, he said Sir Keir’s actions meant “the relationship is obviously not what it was”. Later, at an Oval Office meeting with Mr Merz, he told reporters, unprompted, that “this is not Winston Churchill we’re dealing with”.

So all one would have to do to take over the British Isles is to attack around 7pm?

They really are some clowns over there.

Please tell me that our unions even give in to emergency operational hours.

I am sure to the tune of time and a half (or more).

If you read the stories, the union bitched about it, said they warned the contract didn't provide for uptempo operations.

The sun has set on the Empire.

A remarkable run in world history that is officially ending in a whimper and demise / conquest by its own invitation.

As one who traces my roots (both sides) way back to the United Kingdom, I can only shake my head in disgust but also be eternally grateful that ancestors came to this country I love and is my home, the USA.

Marco might burnout soon.
Following Iran, he has to facilitate Cuba's entry beneath our umbrella.
Add in B.C., and now Cyprus.
Busy dude.

I couldn't possibly fit him in until Monday, sir. I'm booked solid.

Britain effectively doesn’t have a navy right now. For the first time in history, every single Royal Navy capital ship outside of their ballistic missile subs are in port with repairs. Both carriers will be unavailable for months. Even their Astute class attack subs are tied up.

I was wondering how dipshit was going to send carriers that are in drydock.

The reason to build two carriers was so you could have one operational all the time. We have 11 and usually only five or six are operational. Plus we have Amphibious Assault ships with the same capability as the QE class carriers. But more importantly we have escort ships and subs. Right now, we have 15 missile destroyers in theater. The brits have one active destroyer. How would that escort an aircraft carrier?

Hell, the French have a CSG.

In war time with lives on the line you work like your life is on the line.

To think this is what those people once were:

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old.[10]

This reminds me of Churchill’s famous speech

“we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets as long as it is M-F between the hours of 9 to 5.”

The Louisiana National Guard could conquer Britain in a couple of weeks. Three if it's hunting season.
