Never played it, those were my C64 days.

As spotted by PC Gamer, the Adventure Game Aptitude Test, which was held on February 28, 2026, gave players a 4-hour window to clear Maniac Mansion blind. According to How Long To Beat, Maniac Mansion tends to take players somewhere around three and a half hours to beat — meaning the test takers wouldn't have much wiggle room with the game if they got stuck.

So, how'd people fare? Worse than you'd think! Out of 831 participants, only two people managed to get through Maniac Mansion within the allotted time span without any help.

It was a tough game with multiple endings. Really ahead of its time.

I don't find this surprising at all because it's not designed to be beaten in 4 hours.

The game has a lot of trial and error on purpose. You can do a ton of things that get you killed or ruin the playthrough. That is part of the intended experience.

They didn't build the game such that someone who had never played it before could "figure it out" easily.

If you follow a guide you can beat the game in like what 15 minutes? Imagine paying $50 in 1989 for a game you completely beat in less than an hour.

It's purposefully cryptic and built around trial and error to give it a lot of replay value and the joy of discovering new things.

it definitely was. The fact you can beat the game like a wide variety of totally different ways and solve the same problems in different ways with different party compositions, for that era it was extremely revolutionary.

That was a great game. I remember it fondly. And definitely not easy to solve.

So to recap, people familiar with the game still takes a little under 4 hours.

Then let’s get a bunch of people who have never seen it, disallow and support, and go surprised Pikachu face when basically none of them can come close to the replayed timeframe.

Bet there weren’t too many catered lunches with the study.
