Shintech announced Wednesday it will spend $3.4 billion to boost manufacturing capacity at its Plaquemine chemical plant, a move that will create 163 good-paying jobs.

The jobs will have an average annual salary of more than $117,000
, according to Louisiana Economic Development. The expansion is also expected to create about 3,000 construction jobs. Construction employment is expected to peak in 2029.

This is the seventh major expansion at Shintech over the last 20 years, the most recent of which was a $1.25 billion project announced in early 2021 and completed in late 2024. The company has 725 employees at its Iberville Parish facility.

The expansion will involve building a second ethylene unit and a fourth chlor-alkali and vinyl chloride monomer unit. It will also add new technologies designed to reduce emissions. The plant produces PVC, chlor alkali and vinyl chloride monomer.

It's not what you make, it's what you spend.

Every other year I hear another major development in south Louisiana with promises from govt of tax breaks and govt help. Some realize and some fade to the back pages of news stories for whatever reason they chose another state to develop in. But none of these “developments” has made Louisiana more than a poor welfare state.

You’re more than welcome to get rid of all the PVC and chlorinated products in your life.

Have they factored in liability costs into their expense reports?
