Just got my oil changed, and realized the reminder stickers are sneaky

Lets get past the fact that I dont change my own oil. I dont have time to.
Anyway, they try to sell you synthetic oil which lasts longer. The advanced full synthetic at Take 5 lasts 10,000 miles, so that is what I got (probably a sucker). So I asked what my sticker would say… they said 3,000 miles as my “oil change reminder.”
When I asked why, they said something about returning within 3 months or 3,000 miles for a “free top off” of oil or other fluids

Agreed.
If you want to keep your car long term most folks are recommending 5k intervals as a happy medium.
While some people report no problems, there are many documented cases of early wear and failure on modern engines with 10k intervals.
Oil is cheap compared to the engine.

They've always had 3000 on those stickers. Nothing new. Just ignore it and go with manufacturers' recommendation.

Go by the car manufacturer’s recommendation interval not the bottle of oil.

Is usually so around 7k for synthetic. I don't think I've ever went past 10k.

Thanks for this tidbit. Now wish I had not gotten the 10k one, because I usually go about 1000 miles past the sticker

No. 3k mile oil changes are up there with the top scams of all time. 10k miles is nothing for engine oil to last. This post was edited on 2/26/26 at 1:11 pm

and if your trip is greater than five miles and you keep an average speed of at least 100mph the fuel savings will more than make up for more frequent oil changes

1 year or 10000 miles is fine with full synthetic though getting the 1st oil change early is a good idea

Change my own oil. Easy process, simple, and learn things about your vehicle.

It took me about 15 minutes to change my oil last weekend
I’m not cruising for dick though

---I used to do that too, but once---and once was all it took--I mis-threaded the plug. Lost the oil and the motor.
After buying a used motor I went to whatever legit oil place was around. If they mess up, it's on them to fix their mess.

I take my truck to a mom and pop shop and they ask what mileage I want on the sticker. 10k in Mobile 1 synthetic.

The 3000 miles has been a money maker for places for more than 25 years. Even 5,000 is too short for most vehicles.
The upgrades in oil quality and oil filter quality can push lots modern vehicles oil changes over 10,000 miles.
The issue you are now running into is that manufactures are now running super thin oil like 0w8. The viscosity on it is so low that it really does need to be changed regularly

My mechanic recommends 5,000 on synthetic. I'm not sure if that's his standard or b/c the truck has around 250,000 miles on it. He also likes to "keep an eye on it" so he can up-sale me on all the other shite I may/may not want to consider replacing!
