I’ve always wanted to hike in Iceland; I have to go to Denmark in August so I thought I’d combine the two. A flight from Denmark to Reyhavik (sp) and back is super cheap, but the hotel rooms in Iceland are insanely expensive. Average hotel runs $2500 per night. VRBO’s are a fraction of that cost, but I’m wary of a rental in a foreign country.
I’m traveling solo. Any suggestions?

Iceland is incredibly expensive once you are there
But very worth it

Never seen hotel prices like you mention but the whole island is safe. Taking my seven year old there and Airbnb’ing this year

Do it

Are you sure that’s US dollars? Because that’s absurd

Try to get a solo room at Kex hostel

Apparently it’s the Cadillac of hostels from people I asked when there, so many said they’d stayed all over the world and Kex was nice . Price was not bad . It was fine overall. I guess compared to a shithole in Morocco it would be the Taj Mahal

But it’s a cool place to meet other travelers for sure

EDIT to OP: I just looked to see what they had, they’ve since opened an actual
Hotel instead of addition to their renowned Hostel. So this may get you the privacy you want . And it appears to be fairly affordable for a no frills double bed room except for that big festival week they have from August 10-14th ish

That’s when I went years ago. What a blast. And the hostel experience is something I joke about to this day to people.

Worth a shot to check out at least and see what you can find

Nope. US dollars. 305,000 Icelandic krona. The cheapest hotel I saw, which looks like a Red Roof Inn was $900/ night. Granted, August is peak season.

That’s insane. Definitely look for rentals I’ve never had any trouble renting internationally

I traveled in September on a Viking cruise that started in Norway and ended in Iceland. Iceland was impressive — lots of waterfalls, geysers, and hot pools. Icelandair also has affordable direct flights from Nashville, which makes it an easy trip. It can be expensive, but friends have saved money by staying in Airbnbs, renting a car, and buying groceries instead of eating out. Based on our experience and what other travelers shared, there are a few solid recommendations. In Seydisfjordur, there’s a simple walk to a nearby waterfall that works for most activity levels. In Akureyri, the “Northern Iceland’s Natural Treasures” and “Diamonds of the North” tours are popular, but expect long bus rides. Isafjordur has great scenery, and glacier tours from Djupivogur get strong reviews; some people also recommend kayaking at the glacier lagoon if it’s available.

In Reykjavík, the Golden Circle is worth doing, and Sky Lagoon is a good option if you want something easier and less crowded than Blue Lagoon. You can use tap-to-pay almost everywhere, including public restrooms. Food is pricey, so gas-station cafés and grocery stores help keep costs down. If you rent a car, fuel is expensive. Overall, Iceland is easy to manage at different activity levels and offers a lot to see without overcomplicating the trip.

I get it's expensive there. August is Iceland’s #1 peak month — highest demand, best weather, festivals, cruise traffic.

We stayed at the Hotel Borg.

An older, iconic hotel in a centrally located area. Standard Room:
$350–$450 per night range in August. Recall seeing cheaper options when we searched.

Think $200-$300/night would be the best you'd normally find that time of year.

We did a 2 week driving tour on the Ring Road a few years ago. Booked through Iceland Tours. Did it with another couple and had a great time; this was during the month of June.

Below is the list of "mid-level" hotels we stayed at. Most were fairly small hotels but were comfortable and easy to find.

Some had restaurants, some included breakfast, some just had a bar.

I don't have the prices.

Hope this helps

No rooms there, and no, nothing for $300/night. Cheapest I saw was 800,900 and those were shared bathrooms. Sorry, not sharing a bathroom.

A guide I used for Rim to Rim suggested a guide in Reykjavik. Looks like he’s got some good day hikes, which is what I’m looking for. I’ve reached out to him about a recomendation for a VRBO or
Airbnb. It worries me that they are so inexpensive compared to hotels. I don’t want to get scammed, get there and have nowhere to stay. I’m not much of a traveler, only been to Europe once and that was as a chaperone on a HS trip to London and Paris.
I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland and this is my chance, so…

Thank you so much for posting that info, I really do appreciate the effort, but the prices for August are insanely higher. I don’t have an option to go at a different time bc I’m hooking this trip onto a family wedding in Copenhagen.
I will be traveling alone and, I guess I should mention I identify as a female and my husband is 1000000% against it, so I’m trying to be as safe as possible.

Check my edit out to my original reply.

Iceland is one of the safest countries of anywhere. And I met several solo female travelers at the hostel. Never had any issues . Dont lose hope. You can definitely make it happen. I hope you do .

There's a total eclipse on August 12 - that's one reason for the prices.

That’s an insane price! We stayed one night at an Airbnb outside of Vik one night and it was fine. We stayed at the Hilton Reykjavík Nordica the rest of the week and took day trips from there in our rental car. That was in July and prices weren’t near that bad. Gas was the most expensive thing. When I realized I was paying by the liter instead of the gallon, I just stopped paying attention to the price altogether.

Iceland is amazing though. Caves, volcanos, glaciers, waterfalls, waterfalls, waterfalls, crystal clear delicious water, geysers, hot springs, oceans, black sand beaches, cliffs, etc. etc. etc. I’ve described it as raw nature and it’s beautiful!
