I'm surprised this wordsmith didn't make the list before AOC.

That was a hoot. Buckley was not an apt third example, though, because Buckley’s first language was Spanish, and he developed his English in England.

He also developed it in front of a mirror. He went to great lengths to cultivate his accent.

He went to elite boarding schools in England. That’s about how any of us would sound if we had done that in the 50’s.

Now, Buckley WAS a showman, so maybe he groomed it some.

He groomed it a lot. Here's his brother:

I don't think it makes him a bad person or anything, I just always thought it was strange that he cared that much what others thought of his speech.

Maybe so, but I know several Amercans, including my daughter, who have moved to England in their early 20’s. Fifteen years later some sound English, but my daughter sounds like she did the day I dropped her off at the airport. I don’t know why some take to a new accent and some don’t but it’s not all affectation.

WFB pronounced the word 'when' ...as 'hwen.' That's the way I was taught in school back in the 50's. It didn't last with our Cajun accents.

Washington didn't speak with some posh British accent because that accent didn't exist back then. It was something that evolved later on in Britain.

You assumed it because you assumed it?

Correct. RP is about as organic as Buckley's accent.
