Is this standard practice (joint flashing behind siding butt joints)?

Horizontal siding should have joint ?ashing behind all butt joints to prevent water in?ltration. This hidden layer protects the sheathing from moisture damage over time.

Yes
Note: I am not a professional but installed all the hardi siding and trim on my house. Hardi has installation details for their products and joint flashing is part of their detail.
Detail H here

I used the foil joint tape that I cut into pieces. It’s too easy NOT to do.

I cant imagine not doing it.

Yes. If you don’t have the flashing, strips of roofing felt will do.
Not a fan of the “stair-stepping”. Especially at only 16” offset.

Agree, especially in a span like that where you can use a full board. Where I had long runs I stepped at 48”.

I clicked on this thinking it was going to be about woodworking butt joints. My top 3 butt joints i use are mortise & tenon, dowels and dovetails. Followed by splined miter joints with the splines a different color for contrast.
Im going to be doing some doweling with my DowelMax jig later this afternoon. If anyone ever gets into woodworking, i highly suggest the DowelMax jig.

Yes, but I have no idea why they didn’t just use one solid piece right there. There was no need to stair step right there and have to use flashing. A waste of time and material

Probably helps I'm seeing it on a laptop and not a phone, but what looks like a corner wall is actually a steel post/structure of sort. The wall continues on indefinitely. Still doesn't excuse the stair stepping though.
Wish OP would update as to why he was wanting to know. Show up to his new build and see the mexicans had half the house sided without joint flashing?
