A former mayor and political candidate in Bergen County who serves as a police sergeant in Jersey City was indicted on multiple charges, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday.

Andrew LaBruno, 44, of Dumont, was arrested last year after he was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a child he met online, the office said.

LaBruno was indicted Thursday on charges of official misconduct, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.

The official misconduct charge is new and was filed after investigators determined that LaBruno identified himself as a police officer during the incident for the purpose of hindering his own apprehension, the office said.

An affidavit filed in support of the charges stated that LaBruno went to the child’s Englewood home when his parents were not there and “sprayed an unknown substance into his hand.” This caused the victim to become dizzy and incapacitated, before the assault occurred.
