As we reported last week, the firm known as WBD that controls that iconic Warner Bros. studio, HBO Max streaming service and cable properties like CNN and Discovery has been under massive pressure to reopen the entire bidding process and consider a “sweetened” offer from Paramount Skydance.

That, in turn, could upend its nearly sealed, $72 billion deal with Netflix for the studio and streaming service and force it to reconsider the bid by Paramount for all its operations.

More at issue, as previously reported by The Post, is the guarantee of intense regulatory pushback by the antitrust cops in the Trump administration – not just on the deal itself, where Netflix is layering the top streaming service with the No 3 largest in HBO Max, but also scrutiny coming down hard on Netflix itself.

According to one GOP operative with knowledge of the Trump administration position of the Netflix deal: “So far it’s going nowhere with the executive branch.”

The tenor or the regulatory pushback against the Netflix offer — just weeks before WBD shareholders are expected to vote on it — has rattled people inside WBD. Its deal savvy CEO David Zaslav launched the months-long bidding process before settling on Netflix and getting a tremendous boost in WBD’s stock. But in recent days amid the regulatory heat, he’s been looking at a plan-B.

The regulatory approval aspect makes this really interesting to watch. I don't like the merging of Netflix and Max just because it feels anti-competitive, but at the same time we have the whole Disney+/Hulu/Fubu/ESPNUltimate fiasco so there's clearly precedent for allowing this industry to consolidate into just a small number of major players.

The only reason I think Paramount/Skydance would be more appealing is because Paramount is objectively a much smaller provider.

Selling to Paramount would be much better from a consumer standpoint than selling to Netflix. Netflix has proven it cares about producing content only, with quality taking a back seat.

So just like every major film studio in 2026?

Netflix stock is down 25% over the last month based on the fact that no one wants them to own WB.

It's not an ideal situation, but I agree that Netflix would be bad

Yep. Pound for pound its better.

Netflix, to me, is overwhelming. I imagine what it'll be if allowed to purchase WB.

Netflix trying to take over "podcasts" (video versions should have a different name) is a major flex that isn't being discussed enough, IMO.

I do not.

For the consumer, a merger with Netflix would be the most ideal. Without question, Netflix is the most popular streaming option on the market today. Combine the catalogue and original content Netflix has on its site with that of Warner Bros. and HBO, and you have a recipe for success.

These streaming services need to become streamlined, otherwise they're no better than cable.

I agree. My son & I were discussing this a couple days ago. Especially with sports. They don't need to produce anything, just pay for licensing.

Their goal is to hook us in for the live events. You've got Bill Simmons & Michael Irving discussing the next game, & "oh BTW, its on Netflix"

Please tell me why. Other than your nostalgia for the movie theater, what are the cons? I get Netflix originals, their impressive film catalogue, plus Warner Bros. and HBO content all in one streaming app.

Paramount is desperate. Once Sheridan leaves for Peacock all they will have is woke Star Trek and an app that doesn’t work.

Because when you say the consumer you're really just talking about yourself less choices is never a good thing for the consumer.

I'm amazed that people actually want to use that app.

According to the Forrester Consumer Pulse Survey from December 2025, I am not alone. Some 45% of streaming subscribers want this to happen, while 39% are neutral, and the remaining 16% are against it. You are in the minority, my friend. People are generally willing to stomach higher prices if there is more bang for their buck.

No one seemed to bitch and moan when Amazon bought MGM. However, people are triggered by Netflix's hostile takeover because they think theaters are still a net good.

Paramount would gut CNN as they did with CBS News. If your political leanings have you responding, "good", keep in mind that the Ellisons are sucking up to whoever is in power at the moment. They see owning news as a tool to placate any cause (right or left) that lines their pockets.
