That's if you believe it was a legit auction and not a publicity stunt

quote:

Five years ago, Logan Paul set a world record when he purchased a Pokémon card for $5.275 million. It proved a sound investment – the influencer and wrestler sold that card for a jaw-dropping $16.492 million, with a diamond encrusted necklace thrown in.

The rare Pikachu Illustrator card –– one of just 39 created for a Pokémon illustration competition in the late 90s –– went under the hammer on Goldin auctions on Monday.

It is believed to have earned the WWE star more than $8 million in profit after auction fees, a sale he called “absolutely insane.”

quote:

Only eight of the Pikachu Illustrator cards have been awarded a PSA Grade 9 and Paul’s sale is the only PSA Grade 10, the highest and most desirable grade assigned by PSA.

That is a good investment for the new buyer. Good or bad, these kind of investments work out over a long enough period of time

I sense the sarcasm, but to be fair, the buyer had $16.5 million to blow, so he probably knows a little about investing

It's a better piece of art than the shitty things like Balloon Dogs or grid paintings that sell for millions.

For reference this sold for 85.8 Million.

Oh, I think it's silly and ripe for a crash

The Pokémon craze is already slowing down because scalpers turned it into a business and kids are moving on to other things since they can't get drops.

It only really came about when millennials got jobs and money and drove the market. Especially during Covid, when all sorts of retro things took off and eventually settled down, like vintage video games for example.

We live in a clown world that a piece of fricking cardboard intended for children under 10 years old can cost $16 million

Collectables have always been a thing. Lots of rich people all over the world with Pokemon collections, is what it is.

PSA is ruining the market. They have zero consistency, and they tend to grade "known" cards like this high to get in on the publicity. This reeks of a money laundering scam.

The auction winner apparently got this card for free since he made so much money on poly market for this card going over 15 million.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a real auction. Logan Paul scammed a bunch of people with a fake company selling off fractions of ownership on this card and other rare cards.

I bought a first edition hologram charizard card when I was kid for like $100.

Curious what that would be worth if I still had it.

Goldin is a legit business. If he did a scam like that it would ruin him
